Chess Club will meet on Wednesday this week

Greetings! Due to the mid-semester break, the George Fox Chess Club will be meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) this week instead of Friday. As usual, the meeting will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Fischer random chess is a variation where the pieces start at different positions at the start of every game, forcing players to be creative.

Fill out the Chess Club Google Form to tell club leadership when the best time to meet would be for you.

The Community Life Fund is open and petty cash is available

The Community Life Fund is now open and taking requests. To access the CLF Google Form, please refer to ASC’s Instagram @gfu.asc or search “Community Life Fund” on the George Fox website. Additionally, please keep an eye out for any emails you may receive stating that petty cash is available for you to pick up for prior reimbursements.

Office hours are now on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. in Room 116 in the student life office. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please email Janessa Antemann at ascvpfinance@georgefox.edu.

Don’t miss the Woolman Peacemaking Forum on Feb. 25

Mark your calendar! The Woolman Peacemaking Forum is just around the corner, and you won’t want to miss this important conversation taking place on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Hoover 105.

The 3:30 to 5 p.m. Woolman Peacemakers Panel features four perspectives, including a Christian Palestinian living in the West Bank, a Christian of Syrian descent, a Quaker with field experience, and a Jewish man from a Zionist background who was transformed by his work in Gaza.

Panelists will address the following questions about the current crisis in Israel and Palestine:

  • How did we get here (a historic perspective)?
  • Why should I care (a Christian perspective)?
  • What can I do (a call to peacemaking and justice)?
  • The panel event will be followed by a Q&A session, as well as an appetizer reception and exhibitor hall.

The 6 to 8 p.m. Woolman lecture will be presented by Dr. Lamma Mansour. She will give a message entitled, “Bearing Witness: A Christian Palestinian Cry for Justice and Peace.” The lecture will be followed by a time of Q&A.

Have our Woolman Peacemaking Forum scholar speak in your class

Would you like to have Dr. Lamma Mansour, this year’s Woolman Peacemaking Forum scholar, visit your class?

Dr. Lamma Mansour is a Christian Palestinian and Rhodes Scholar from Nazareth, Israel. She holds a DPhil and MPhil in social policy and intervention from the University of Oxford, and also earned a BSc in psychology from the University of Haifa. She is an international speaker contributing to conversations on the intersection of faith and society. Her research centers on young people in Israel/Palestine.

Mansour will be on campus Feb. 24-26. If you would like to have her present in your class or visit for a Q&A, please contact Tamara Wytsma at twytsma@georgefox.edu.

Parent and Family Programs invite you to join us in a day devoted to prayer for the students, faculty and administration of George Fox. We welcome our families and George Fox community to take time during this day to pray from your homes or work as you feel led.

Early-bird deadlines are approaching for George Fox donor-funded scholarships and OSAC scholarships! Don’t miss out on the opportunity to earn extra financial aid by completing your scholarship applications on time.

George Fox Donor-Funded Scholarships

George Fox University offers over 200 donor-funded scholarships to our returning students, ranging from $500 to $15,000! The early-bird deadline is Saturday, Feb. 15, at 11:59 p.m. Students who submit their applications by this deadline will be entered into a drawing for an additional $500 early-bird scholarship.

OSAC*

The Office of Student Access and Completion offers over 600 scholarships to students who are Oregon residents, totaling more than $10 million in awards.

The early-bird deadline for the OSAC State Scholarship application is Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 11:59 p.m. Submit your application by the due date to be entered into a drawing for one of several $1,000 early-bird scholarship awards! The final deadline to apply is March 3.

You can also submit your confirmation email from OSAC to the George Fox financial aid office by Feb. 18 to be in another drawing for a one-time $500 scholarship!

*You must submit your 2025-26 FAFSA or ORSAA to be eligible for these scholarships.

Grammy-winning vocalist performs tomorrow night in Bauman Auditorium

Join us in Bauman Auditorium tomorrow night (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. for an exciting “Evening of Jazz” performance by Grammy-winning jazz musician Johnaye Kendrick. Staff and students each may have one complimentary ticket, provided they use their own email at checkout.

Kendrick is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and educator. She received a Bachelor of Music from Western Michigan University, a Master of Music from Loyola University, and an Artist Diploma from the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

In 2014, she founded her johnygirl record label in an effort to release honest music representative of her world. On this label she has recorded, produced, and released two albums: HERE, a collection of heartfelt originals, and FLYING, a collection of original works and thoughtful arrangements of jazz standards and contemporary works.

Sign up for SpiL’s ‘Away with God’ retreat by tomorrow

You’re invited to join us for an off-campus retreat during mid-semester break on Thursday, Feb. 13, through Saturday, Feb. 15.

These retreats are thoughtfully designed for a small group of 10-12 students and will take place off campus. During the retreat, participants can expect to enter into a slower pace to engage in various spiritual practices that refresh their mind, body, and spirit. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to create connections with fellow students and staff, fostering a sense of community and support.

You must fill out this application to express interest in attending. You will receive a confirmation email to let you know you’ve been selected to attend and then you will secure your spot with $20. The $20 covers food, lodging, and transportation. The last day to sign up is tomorrow (Friday).
