Attend lecture on pro-life beliefs March 19

Did you know that 20% of pro-life Americans self-identify as nonreligious? Groups like Secular Pro-Life and Pro-Life Humanists challenge the idea that pro-life beliefs are solely religious. Nevertheless, pro-life views remain most common among religious communities. Why is this?

Join us in EHS 102 on Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. as Jason Lepojärvi explores this thought-provoking question in a lecture, “Pro-Life Atheist: Oxymoron?”

The Chess Club’s Fischer Random Tournament is this Saturday, March 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 102. If you are not an avid chess player, have no fear – the tournament is open to all, and there will be prizes for those who place in the competition and those who do not.

Serve the Newberg community at Saturday Service

Spiritual Life is excited to announce that Saturday Service is now up and running for the spring semester! Join us for a weekly opportunity to serve our community through Habitat for Humanity, The Wood Ministry and ARK Pet Rescue.

This service event runs every Saturday through April 26. Volunteers can earn one SpiL credit per service.

  • Habitat for Humanity Newberg: Help out with inventory and registration at the ReStore or help build houses at the construction site.
  • The Wood Ministry of Newberg: Help split, stack and deliver wood alongside veterans and other volunteers serving to keep homes warm for the winter.
  • Ark Pet Rescue: Come make a “pawsitive” impact with ARK Pet Rescue by cleaning litter boxes, sweeping and mopping, washing dishes, feeding the animals, tidying the guinea pig area, washing carriers, and assisting with other small tasks.

Kinesiology seniors need female athlete volunteers

Calling all female athletes! Help us find the relationship between lower extremity performance and urinary leakage in female Division III athletes. Please fill out our survey using this link.

If you meet our study criteria, we will be reaching out to schedule a 20-minute testing session. During this session, you will perform an isometric back squat and a vertical jump.

Dan Kang and the Faculty Scholarship and Achievement Committee invite you to join them for the Spring Faculty Lecture tonight (Tuesday) at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Ekaterina Lomperis, the Richard B. Parker Associate Professor of Theology and Wesleyan Thought and winner of the 2023-24 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship, is our featured faculty speaker. Lomperis will speak about “Spiritual Reformations of Medicine: Early Modern Beginnings and Contemporary Possibilities.”

University members and the surrounding community are invited. Please join us as we hear Lomperis share her research on the transformations of religious perspectives on medicine and healing during an era of reform, with a particular focus on Martin Luther’s thought.

Sign up for SNAP benefits at the Bruin Community Pantry

Department of Human Services (DHS) representatives will be on site at the Bruin Community Pantry to assist folks with signing up for food stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. No appointment is required.

Staff will be at the food bank from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on the following Thursdays:

Come listen to Dr. Bert Emerson, associate professor of English and honors program director at Whitworth University, lecture about what American literature might teach us about democracy today. The lecture, given in EHS 102 at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) will be based on his recent book, American Literary Misfits.

Additionally, join a discussion of American Literary Misfits in Hoover 250 at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, with George Fox faculty members Harrison Dietzman, Ed Song, and Rachel Winslow, who will be giving short responses to the book, followed by a response from Emerson.
