Please use personal transportation responsibly

October 31st, 2024

As part of our commitment to campus safety, we want to ensure all personal transportation devices, including bicycles, skateboards, and e-mobility devices, are used responsibly. All devices must be operated respectfully on roads and sidewalks only, with operators yielding to pedestrians and using courteous communication when approaching. For everyone’s safety, all devices may not be ridden inside campus buildings, and riders should keep wheels on the ground at all times.

For those using e-mobility devices, university policy supports their safe and respectful use around campus. E-mobility devices, such as e-scooters, e-bikes, and hoverboards, should be ridden at slower speeds, especially in pedestrian-heavy areas. Devices must not block fire exits, stairways, or emergency access areas and should be parked only at designated bike racks. Remember, helmets and other safety gear are highly recommended. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in keeping our campus safe and accessible for all!

Join us for ‘Stand Tall, Don’t Fall,’ a seasonal safety initiative

October 30th, 2024

As daylight fades with the fall back time change, staying visible is key to staying safe while walking outside. This season, our “Stand Tall, Don’t Fall” campaign is here to support you!

Our first focus is on adjusting to shorter daylight hours and ensuring you, and your furry friends, are easily seen while walking outside. To help, the Safety Committee is offering reflective arm bands for you. These bands are designed to increase visibility in low-light conditions, giving you a safe and comfortable way to enjoy outdoor activities as evenings get darker.

You’re welcome to pick up these free reflective bands while supplies last, at the front desks of the following locations: People and Culture, Plant Services, the Medical Sciences Building, and the Portland Center.

Our goal is to provide an easy way for everyone to “Stand Tall” by staying safe and visible throughout the season. Thank you for joining us in making this fall a safer one for our community!

Reminder: Set Your Clocks Back One Hour on Nov. 3

With the switch to standard time, here are some tips to be mindful of:

  • Be Alert: It will be getting dark earlier, so wear reflective clothing if you run or walk after 5 pm.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Keep your head up and ears open.
  • Choose well-lit routes: Stick to paths, sidewalks, or trails that you are familiar with and are well-lit.
  • Watch your step: Be cautious around curbs, potholes and uneven surfaces.

Use Morse parking lot to avoid the scary traffic situation tomorrow

October 30th, 2024

Tomorrow (Friday), cement trucks will be arriving on campus as early as 7 a.m. to start pouring cement at the cinematic arts/art building site next to the Klages Center. There will be times when you shall not pass the cement truck, as it’ll be blocking Carlton Way across from Weesner Village.

What can a ghoul do? You may have to wait 20 minutes in order to move when the cement truck is leaving, but if there’s another cement truck in the queue ready to go, that window will not open and you’ll have to continue waiting (we’ve all “been there, done bat”).

If you’d rather avoid all of the hullaba-boo, we’ll treat you right at the Morse parking lot. Or, if you’ve got another thing pumpkin and don’t plan on leaving for the day, stay put!

The cement trucks will be circling (“what ghost around comes around”) until about 1 p.m. tomorrow. Thank you for your patience! We appreciate you reading the announcement. It’s been a scream.

October 30th, 2024
