A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our first-ever “Work Safe, Be Well” bingo challenge! We were thrilled to see so many of you taking steps to improve your health and safety at work, from conducting ergonomic self-assessments to practicing new wellness habits. Your engagement made this initiative a great success.

Come join the SpiL service and immersion team in chopping firewood alongside our neighbors tomorrow (Saturday) morning! This week we have the opportunity to serve for an extra hour, from 8 to 11 a.m.

We will be serving alongside members of the Newberg Friends Church. We will meet at the Fernwood Pioneer Cemetery, located near 500 S. Everest Road. There is no registration required, but chapel credit is offered. We hope to see you there!

Agenda: We encourage you to attend to get crucial updates and information on key program areas.

• Meet the dean and program director: Meet the leaders of the College of Nursing and other key people that will walk with you on your journey as a nursing major.
• Information regarding your faculty advisors: Learn how to find who your advisor is and how to best utilize their support for academic success.
• Nursing Club announcements: Hear about upcoming events, opportunities, and how to get involved.
• Admission requirements review: A detailed look at the application and prerequisite requirements for the program.
• Program compliance requirements: A review of important deadlines and mandatory compliance items (e.g. background checks, immunizations) needed to maintain your status in the program.

This is a great opportunity to get clarity on essential program details and connect with your peers and faculty. We look forward to seeing you there!

In an era of deep political division, heated rhetoric, and rising political violence, what does it mean to seek common ground? Join our Oregon House majority and minority leaders for a timely and essential conversation on the state of civility in politics on Tuesday, Oct 7, at 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

The representatives will discuss their experiences, the challenges of legislating across the aisle, and whether a more respectful and productive political discourse is possible. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from key decision-makers about how we can navigate our differences and find a better path forward for Oregon.

This time of the semester can be difficult for students as the excitement of a new term is waning, exams and assignments pile up, and the demands of college take a toll on physical and mental health.

If you have concerns about a traditional undergraduate student, log into Fox360 (Fox360.georgefox.edu) to submit an “alert” for the student. Submit alerts for concerns in the following areas:

• Academic: Missing multiple classes; consistently poor academic performance
• Behavioral: Concerning or disruptive behaviors in or outside of class, frequent absence from scheduled work shifts
• Emotional: Mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety); unusual emotional expression; suicidal ideation
• Physical: Medical concerns; extreme changes in grooming, personal care
• Social: Personal, social, or family concerns that are affecting well-being and performance

A few notes about alerts:

• If a student is enrolled in your course but hasn’t attended class or engaged in GFD online activity, submit an alert.
• Student employee supervisors and other non-faculty are invited to submit alerts for the reasons above.

The Student Support Network will assign a “case manager” to follow up with students. Case managers will do our best to give updates to faculty and employees who submit alerts or provide feedback. You are welcome to contact Jere Witherspoon at jwithers@georgefox.edu to inquire about the status of a student.

Department of Human Services representatives will be on-site at the Bruin Community Pantry to assist folks with signing up for food stamps (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits).

No appointment is required. The hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, and Thursday, Oct. 23. Stop by if you would like to speak with someone from DHS.

Sign up for a Bruin Community Pantry cooking class: Instant Ramen Kitchen (recipes that go beyond the packet). Here are the details:

• Date and time: Sunday, Oct. 19, from 3 to 5 p.m.
• Location: Bruin Community Pantry (Lewis Apartment 1)
• What we are cooking: Elevated ramen recipes. We will be making two recipes from the book Instant Ramen Kitchen
• Class size: Eight participants (more classes to come). First come, first served.

All supplies will be provided free of charge. You will be contacted on Thursday, Oct. 16, to confirm your participation. If you are unable to attend after signing up for a spot, please contact Jere Witherspoon immediately so we can arrange for someone on the waitlist to attend.

Make your voice heard! The university’s engineering program and Yamhill County Public Works are partnering to plan a future bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvement within Yamhill County, and we want to hear any challenges you experience as a cyclist or pedestrian using county-owned roadways.

Your feedback will help to inform and prioritize the county’s plan for improvements, so please take five minutes to fill out this interest form.

Are you interested in ham radio? Join the George Fox Ham Radio Club. If you don’t have your radio license, we can help you get started. We are planning some outdoor radio activities, including hiking, hidden transmitter hunts, and training on how to help with communications during an emergency. We would love to have you there!

Interested in participating in a study to examine the impact of weight loading on burning calories? Using weighted vests while walking or running, also known as rucking, has become a popular trend.

We are conducting a research study to test the benefits of rucking and to understand how much weight needs to be used to significantly impact oxygen consumption and energy expenditure.

We are looking for non-athlete George Fox students who exercise regularly and are not frequent users of weighted vests. If you are interested, please fill out this form and contact one of the researchers listed.

We are looking for participants ages 18 to 35 for our kinesiology senior research study! This study’s purpose is to research the effects of weighted vest training on recreational runners’ 5K performance.

If you would like a structured running program for the next six to eight weeks, this study is for you. This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself, be part of new research for an increasingly popular training tool, and gain insight into your own running performance!

The George Fox theatre department invites you to see its fall 2025 production, Havurah, presented through the Big Bridge Theatre Consortium.

Written by Margot Connolly and directed by Ben Tissell, the play tells the story of life at Crosby College, a small liberal arts university, where two student clubs strive for connection and comfort in difficult times.

When a tragedy occurs in the local Jewish community, members of the Havurah club are left reeling. The Christian social justice club wants to help, but struggles to know how. Deeply relevant and strikingly realistic, Havurah depicts the complexities and possibilities of connecting with others in times of grief.

The show opens on Thursday, Oct. 23, and closes on Nov. 2. Evening shows start at 7:30 p.m., and weekend matinees start at 2 p.m. Employees are entitled to one complimentary ticket, and students may attend free on either Thursday. You may reserve tickets here.

George Fox alumnus Jonathan Cirualo will give a public lecture, “Nostalgia, the Early Church, and the Hope of Christian Unity,” at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) in Hoover 105.

Cirualo serves as associate professor of systematic theology at the Catholic University of America. The lecture will explore what the study of patristics has to offer ecumenical efforts, woven together with reflections on Cirualo’s intellectual and spiritual journey.
