Be aware of statewide transit tax

Wednesday, July 4th, 2018

As of July 1, 2018, you’ll see a new item on your paystub for Oregon’s statewide transit tax. The tax is one-tenth of one percent (.001) — or $1 per $1,000. Your employer will be automatically withholding the tax – just like the personal income tax – so you don’t have to do or change anything. Unlike the personal income tax, there’s no withholding exemption for this tax.

Revenue from the statewide transit tax will go to expanding public transportation throughout Oregon. For more information on how the tax revenues will be used, check out “HB 2017 Funding Package” under “Projects & News” on the Oregon Department of Transportation’s website.

To learn more about the tax itself, visit the Department of Revenue online at oregon.gov/dor.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Kasondra Silva at ksilva@georgefox.edu.

Expect major construction delays in Portland

Tuesday, June 26th, 2018

If you travel through Portland regularly to get to work at the Newberg campus or Portland Center, or take classes at either campus, you need to be aware of major construction closures occurring during July and August on the I-5 and I-84 interchanges by the Moda Center.

Please go to this website for all of the specifics, and plan now for alternate routes, as back-ups are expected to be lengthy during ramp and lane closures.

Tripcheck.com is another good source, as it has current webcams all over the state as well as a listing of potential closures or delays on roads you might be traveling for summer vacations.

Tips on how to stay cool as hot weather approaches

Tuesday, June 12th, 2018

With high temperatures being forecast for next week, here are a few safety tips to stay cool …

  • Purchase a fan now before local store supplies run out.
  • Purchase and cut wooden dowels two to four inches shorter than your window track length to safely keep windows open for ventilation at night, and to prevent unwanted entry.
  • Keep curtains closed and windows shut during the daytime and only open up when temperatures have dropped to 70 degrees or below. Use a box window fan to blow in cooler air right before going to sleep.
  • Hydrate!
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Do not prop open entry doors in a dorm or apartment, as you put the entire residence at risk of unwanted entry.
  • If working outdoors, freeze several damp towels and bring them to your work site in a cooler and place periodically around your neck to cool down your body.
  • Seek medical treatment immediately if signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke are present. (Don’t know what they are? Take the First Aid/AED/CPR classes next Monday and Tuesday to learn how to recognize and treat these serious conditions. Sign-ups are on the Campus Public Safety website).

Some outdoor safety tips for the three-day weekend

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018

With a long holiday weekend ahead, here are some safety tips if camping, hiking or backpacking are on your get-away list!

  • Research cell phone coverage for your trip. If you will be out of range, find out how to access services for the ranger or local law enforcement. Check out communication devices at outdoor stores that allow you to text, boost your signal or use your cell phone as a radio in case of emergency.
  • Leave at home or in a safety deposit box all jewelry, electronics, unneeded cash and credit cards. Connect with other campers, and if they seem trustworthy, agree to watch each other’s tent and camping equipment when out on a hike or day excursion.
  • Take valuables with you if at all possible or use a diversion safe that looks like an ordinary object.
  • Hide items that you need to store in your vehicle and transfer them to your trunk prior to arriving at your destination.
  • Lock your vehicle and close windows and sunroofs.
  • Look for people loitering around parking areas, and don’t leave your car if there are suspicious persons hanging around.
  • Trust your instincts! If something feels “off” about a campsite or campers, follow your gut.
  • Carry a whistle or noise-maker to draw attention to yourself if you need help.
  • Make a family plan about what to do if any family member becomes separated from the group.

These great tips are courtesy of the City of Portland’s Crime Prevention Program.
