George Fox undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply for student research funding through the Richter Scholarship program. The second round of scholarship applications are due by 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. The program provides stipends and supply funds for research in collaboration with a faculty member.

The Spring Faculty Lecture, “Channeling the Inklings: A Dialogue About Writing Group Success,” will be presented by Ed Higgins, Polly Peterson, Melanie Springer Mock (Writing/Literature), and Kendra Weddle Irons (Religious Studies) from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in Hoover 105.

The presenters will examine the use of writing groups for teaching and scholarship and discuss their group’s parallel to the Inklings, a famous English writing group that included C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien.

Parents of George Fox students will gather at the Newberg campus and in homes along the West Coast to pray for the George Fox University community from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 14. We are gathering prayer requests that will guide this time of prayer.

If you would like the request to be anonymous, please indicate so in your e-mail. Please e-mail your requests by this Friday, Feb. 26.

Beginning Monday, March 2, the Mail Services courier will be delivering to the Salem campus on Mondays and Thursdays each week. Service to the Portland Center will continue each day Monday through Friday.

Items for the Portland or Salem campuses must be brought to University Mail Services by 9:45 a.m. and clearly labeled to show the intended recipient or department.

If you are interested in global issues, love to travel, enjoy learning about other cultures and foreign languages, and have a heart for community service, the Peace Corps may be the right fit for you. The organization will host an on-campus  information session and application workshop from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in Lemmons 15 on the Newberg campus.

Jeff VandenHoek (School of Management) will give leadership to the newest School of Management graduate program — a full-time MBA program that will launch on the Newberg campus this August. It will be a highly integrative, intense, intentional, cohort-based, 11-month program. We welcome referrals. Due to a reallocation of resources to the full-time MBA and the accreditation process, we will faze out the Executive Track MBA program with its current cohorts when they graduate in 2010. You’re invited to join the university’s International Justice Mission Chapter for a sex-trafficking awareness event from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Duke Atrium of the Stevens Center. The gathering will include food, live music, and plenty of chances to learn more about this very serious issue and ways that you can create change here in Oregon and abroad.

Homecoming 2009 is set to take place this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, on the Newberg campus. Hosted by Alumni Relations, this annual celebration includes a diverse selection of events designed to help alumni reconnect with each other and with the university.

Highlights of Homecoming 2009 include the Winter Music Concert on Friday night; the Alumni Celebration Brunch Saturday morning; class reunions (for the classes of 1939, 1949, 1969, 1979, 1984, 1989, and 1999) Saturday afternoon; and a Young Alumni Gathering at Abby’s Pizza on Saturday night. Additionally, this year’s schedule features two special affinity reunions — one for alumni of the George Fox football program, and one for alumni of any George Fox business program.

Homecoming also features the final two nights of conference basketball play for both the men and undefeated women squads.

Alumna and author Dawn Herzog Jewell will be on the Newberg campus on Monday, Feb. 16, to talk about her work helping victims of sex trafficking. She will be speaking in chapel at 10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium and host a book signing at 11:45 a.m. in the University Bookstore. She is the author of Escaping the Devil’s Bedroom.

Herzog Jewell’s chapel talk will weave the stories of individual victims of sexual exploitation with an examination of the realities that got them there in North America and overseas. She also will highlight ministries that are reaching one life at a time through prayerful visits to strip-clubs, bars and seedy streets.

There is now a Prayer Request box in the Portland Center prayer chapel.

If you would like to share a prayer concern with the PrayerNet team you can do so by placing a request in the prayer box. PrayerNet is a group of employees who seek to strengthen and serve the GFU community through intercessory prayer.

Don’t forget to register for Kaleo 2009, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 7, in Bauman Auditorium. We desire our youth not to simply be believers in Christ, but followers of Christ — ordinary people living radically in the love of Jesus Christ, called to bring forth another world among us.

Come and enjoy worship and teaching with guest speaker Shane Claiborne and worship leader Aaron Strumpel. The event also features workshops covering more than a dozen topics.

Shane Claiborne, author of Irresistible Revolution and guest speaker for the Kaleo youth ministry conference Saturday and the Monday, Feb. 9, chapel, will host a talk-back session after chapel from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bruin Den Annex. Students and employees are invited to attend.

Learn about the issue of racism in Portland through the film Grandma Zula’s Legacy at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in EHS 102 (note room change) on the Newberg campus. Meet the film’s creator and producer through a talkback discussion.

George Fox Evangelical Seminary and Shapevine are co-hosting “Recalibrating Concepts of Church” from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Bauman Auditorium.

Authors Len Sweet, MaryKate Morse, Frank Viola, Alan Hirsch, and Dan Kimball will discuss their books and engage in conversation with each other and the audience. Lance Ford will moderate. This is a reminder to pick up your free ticket for the play “Portraits of Courage: African Americans You Wish You Had Known,” scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, in Bauman Auditorium.

The presentation portrays six African Americans — Ida B. Wells, Lewis Latimer, Colonel Young, C.J. Walker, Bass Reeves and Fannie Lou Hamer — who were influential to the development of America but are typically overlooked in the history books. There will be a discussion afterwards.

Students and employees may pick up their complimentary ticket at the University Store. Outside community members may purchase tickets at a rate of $8 for adults, $6 for seniors/alumni, and $5 for students with ID. Tickets may be purchased in person at the bookstore or by calling 503-554-3844. The play features reserved seating starting at 6:30 p.m.
