Esther L. Meek, professor of philosophy at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., will speak Tuesday and Wednesday, March 11-12, for the university’s annual Spring Theological Conference.
Meek will address the community at a Tuesday “Intellectual Feast” hosted by the College of Christian Studies (4 p.m., Hoover 250), and at morning chapel on Wednesday (10:40 a.m., Bauman Auditorium). She’ll also visit philosophy classes and meet on campus with Sophilo (Philosophy Club). The theme for the conference is “Loving in Order to Know: A How-to for Knowing and Being.”
A writer, teacher, speaker and conversationalist, Meek especially likes to think and talk about how we know (epistemology). She’s the author of several books. Her latest, A Little Manual for Knowing, will be available for purchase during the conference.

Make plans to join us for the university’s Spring Faculty Lecture, “Miley Cyrus, the Google Algorithm and the New Epistemology,†presented by Ken Badley from our education department, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Hoover 105. There is no charge to attend.
The lecture will be preceded by a Richter Scholars Symposium beginning at 5 p.m. in the Hoover lobby (food will be served). The Richter Scholars program enables undergraduate and graduate students to receive funding for independent research projects conducted with a faculty mentor.

What connection does Miley Cyrus have to the Google algorithm? Badley argues that cultural trends have changed how we think, what knowledge we value, and how we judge wisdom. Our obsession with celebrities, our immersion in digital technology, and our high-irony combine to leave us wondering what is worthwhile and who will guide our steps.
About Ken Badley
Badley, recipient of the university’s 2013 Faculty Award for Excellence in Research/Scholarship at the graduate level, serves in George Fox’s doctoral program in education. He completed his PhD dissertation at the University of British Columbia by examining what Christian educators mean by the phrase, “the integration of faith and learning.â€
His current writing projects include applying architectural theory to curriculum and course design, and gathering a collection of quotations which are all deliberately misattributed to either Jesus, Polonius, Yogi Berra or Groucho Marx.
For the fourth time in the last 12 years, the university is hosting an “Empty Bowls†fundraiser – this time to benefit longtime art professor Doug Campbell as he continues to recover from a November 2012 stroke.
Join us this Friday, March 7, for an “Empty Bowls†dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Klages Dining Hall. For $12, attendees will receive a meal in a handmade ceramic bowl created by students, alumni, faculty members and guest professional artists. The cost is $10 per person for families of four or more. Sponsoring the event are Bob’s Red Mill, Newberg Bakery and Bon Appetit.
In all, about 2,200 bowls were created, according to event organizer Mark Terry. And more exciting news: An anonymous donor has agreed to match all funds raised at the event, so your $12 donation will actually be $24.

There is still time to register for the Faith and Culture Writers Conference! The event begins Friday, March 7, at Newberg Friends Church (307 S. College St.) and continues on the Newberg campus Saturday, March 8. A number of well-known writers will be in attendance, including Sarah Bessey, Tony Kriz, Sarah Thebarge and Deidra Riggs, among others.
Please note the new location for Friday’s check-in (5:45 p.m.) and large-group session (7 p.m.). We had to move to this off-campus venue because of space restrictions.

This is a reminder regarding the university’s driving/transportation policy. Our priority is to have policies in place that help ensure the safety and health of all members of our community, and transportation is an important component of this.
Please take a few minutes to review the policy on this page.
There are two separate transportation policies:

2. Policy and Procedures for Driving Personal Vehicles on University Business
You must be approved under each category to drive either a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on university business.

Important to note: Please allow a minimum of five days after passing the quiz before your expected use of a university vehicle. If you have not gone through the proper steps to complete the quiz, you will not be allowed to drive a university vehicle.
This policy applies to all employees and students.
The works of Beethoven will be performed on the George Fox stage when Bösendorfer Educational Artist Kenn Willson presents his “Encounters with Beethoven†concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in Bauman Auditorium.
Employees and students are entitled to one complimentary ticket each. They can be picked up in the Box Office located in the Pennington House. Additional tickets may be purchased on this page.
Willson will perform German Dance #1, Sonata Op. 31 #3, Sonata Op. 27 #2 (“Moonlightâ€) and Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee (Tune: Ode to Joy). He has traveled to Vienna, Austria, and to the Piano Academy in Recanati, Italy, to perform. He is also known throughout the region for his “Encounters with Beethoven†performances. In 2005, Willson was named a Bösendorfer Educational Artist by the Viennese Piano Manufacturing Company.
The Bösendorfer Concert Series, sponsored by the music department, has brought in world-renowned classical pianists since its inception in 2007. Past performers have included Baruch Meir, Gianluca Luisi of Italy and Valentina Lisitsa of Ukraine.
