Join a spring break service trip to help flood victims in Whatcom County, Washington

Wednesday, December 21st, 2022

Students and employees are invited to prayerfully consider applying to join the spiritual life team for our 2023 spring break trip to serve communities impacted by the 2021 flood disaster in Whatcom County, Washington. The trip is scheduled March 25 to April 1.

We will work with World Renew DRS partners from the Whatcom Long-Term Recovery Group. Located in the northwest corner of Washington state, Whatcom County is home to the Nooksack River, which had historic flooding in November 2021 (learn more about the flooding here or by watching this video).

Spiritual life (SpiL) trips encourage participants to engage in daily rhythms of solitude, prayer, shared cooking and meals, meaningful service together, Bible study and worship, individual and team reflection, immersion in outdoor nature and local cultures, the deepening of spiritual friendships, recreation and fun! (Undergraduate participants would also be eligible to gain up to five SpiL/chapel elective credits for this experience).

The cost is $175 per undergraduate student (covers all students’ lodging, travel, food, work materials/supplies and trip organization/coordination). Registration and a $50 deposit is due by Wednesday, Jan. 25, to reserve a spot on the trip.

If there is an overabundance of interest from students and staff, an additional SpiL trip will be added to serve in neighboring Okanogan County, Washington, in their recovery from wildfires in 2021.

Employees who would like to participate on a trip are encouraged to apply to be a SpiL trip mentor, and, if selected, would serve at no cost.

If interested, please email Rus St.Cyr at rstcyr@georgefox.edu.

Wellness Wednesdays: Create Memories

Tuesday, December 13th, 2022

For many of us, the holidays generate some of our most vivid memories. And it’s funny the odd things that stick with us. It’s often not at all the presents or the egg nog. Maybe it’s the memory of spying your Christmas gift under the tree as a kid? Maybe the smell of cinnamon cookies or orange peel, or the smell of your loved one’s special perfumes take you back to some of your favorite childhood memories?

Christmastime is filled with all kinds of wonderful smells. Scents can powerfully create and trigger our memories. Find out how that works and how to intentionally create an atmosphere of well-being and fond holiday memories this season.

Purchasing a new cell phone over break? Be aware of this info before you buy

Tuesday, December 13th, 2022

If you get a new phone, here is what you need to know so you don’t lose access to your George Fox email, Canvas, Zoom or other apps that use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). If you only use Okta Verify or Google Authenticator, the app will transfer to your new phone but not the account information.

Before purchasing a new phone, make sure that you have one of the following methods also set up:

  • SMS Authentication (text message)
  • Voice Call Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication: Set up a Second Authentication Method

You will not be able to use Okta Verify or Google Authenticator until you go through the setup process again. Here are the directions to set up Okta Verify and/or Google Authenticator when you have a second method setup: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): I Got a New Phone.

If you got a new phone and activated it without SMS or Voice Call set up, then you must contact the Service Desk.

Questions regarding MFA? Contact the Service Desk at servicedesk@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2569.

‘Joy and Mindful Eating’ webinar available on Dec. 14

Sunday, December 11th, 2022

Sometimes we eat because we are hungry, and our bodies need a boost in energy. Other times we may find ourselves eating because we need comfort or even eating out of boredom.

Our relationships with food can change over time and from meal to meal. It can be helpful to pause for a moment so that we can really appreciate what is on our plate and think about our relationship with the next meal.

A registered dietitian with Providence, Jamie, will talk about the multitude of food relationships we may have and how we can use mindful eating to encourage healthy habits. The webinar takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 14, from noon to 12:30 p.m. Click here to register for the webinar.
