Thornburg’s presentation Tuesday kicks off lecture series

The inaugural lecture of the Dalton Lecture Series, featuring Dr. Kent Thornburg, will begin tonight (Tuesday). Thornburg will present “New Science Wrestles An Old Problem: The Roots of Human Disease” at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

This lecture will be followed by a reception and student research poster session.

Bruins open playoffs at home against UPS Thursday

It’s playoff time! Come out to support our women as they once again take on the University of Puget Sound Loggers in the first round of the Northwest Conference Basketball Tournament. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in the Wheeler Sports Center.

Prices set by the NWC are:

  • $6 for adults
  • $3 for non-GFU/UPS students
  • $3 for those 65 and older
  • George Fox and UPS students will be admitted free. No passes will be accepted.

We need to rock the gym! And as always, be loud, be proud, be a Bruin!

Staff worship events planned in March

The Staff Development Committee invites Newberg staff to gather for morning worship on Tuesday, March 1, in VAC 117 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. A time of worship, praise and fellowship (with refreshments) is planned.

Portland staff will gather on March 8.

Faculty and staff portrait session scheduled March 3

Marketing Communications will host a staff/faculty portrait session from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, in our Le Shana Hall studio. These high-quality studio portraits will be used on the university website and will be available for professional promotional use.

Support May Serve garage sale on March 12

Dr. Thornburg speaks at first Dalton lecture event Feb. 22

Dr. Kent Thornburg, a George Fox alumnus (’67), will present a lecture, entitled “New Science Wrestles An Old Problem: The Roots of Human Disease,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

Dr. Thornburg is the director of Oregon Health & Science University’s Heart Research Center and has served on the George Fox Board of Trustees since 1983. His presentation will be followed by a reception and poster presentation featuring biology and chemistry research students. All are welcome to attend.

This inaugural Dalton Lecture Series event is sponsored by the Department of Biology and Chemistry and features eminent scientists who are Christian.

All-employee meeting scheduled on Feb. 22

An all-employee meeting is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Hoover 105. Following the meeting, there will be a farewell reception for Jim Fleming (IT) in the Stevens Center atrium.

For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available for viewing at stream.georgefox.edu/live/commmtg.sdp. A chat room has also been set up, and a video recording of the meeting will be available for viewing in the days following the meeting at itunesu.georgefox.edu.

Memorial service for Louise Clarkson scheduled Saturday

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Newberg Friends Church for Louise Clarkson. Louise passed quietly on Monday and is survived by her husband Marvin and their three children and grandchildren. Marvin retired from George Fox in 2009 after working as a groundskeeper at the university for 18 years.

Marvin and Louise attended 2nd Street with their son Chuck and grandchildren Joel, Amanda and Caleb. She will be missed.
