On-demand webinar now available: ‘Living with Loss One Day at a Time, at Home and at Work’

Tuesday, April 30th, 2024

After losing someone you care about, your life can feel like it is no longer your own. The best way to find the courage, perseverance and desire to rebuild and redefine your new life is living with the loss, one day at a time.

Emotional recovery is not accomplished by checking off items on a list but rather living the loss, establishing a new relationship with your loved ones and the people around you, both at work and at home.

This session will provide you with ideas and tools for how to interact with others, how to find passion and purpose, and how to rebuild your future.

Here’s how to get to the Canopy webinar center:

  1. Go to my.canopywell.com.
  2. Once logged in, select the ‘Webinar & Training Center’ tile.
  3. Select the “On-Demand Webinars” button.

Check out the final installment of ‘Bite-sized Wellness Ideas’

Monday, April 29th, 2024

Here is your final installment of “Bite-sized Wellness Ideas” from your local Wellness Committee. Yes, all good things must come to an end, but take heart! We have some great new activities and events coming your way. Stay tuned!

Walking: It sounds too simple, but one of the simplest “exercise snacks” is to take a short walk. Walk around your building, walk up and down some stairs, or intentionally park further away from your destinations. Just five to 10 minutes of brisk walking gets your blood pumping.

Take a nap: Naps offer various benefits for healthy adults, including relaxation, reduced fatigue, increased alertness, improved mood, and improved performance, including quicker reaction time and better memory. Check out this article from the Mayo Clinic that touches on the benefits (and potential drawbacks).

Take a walk in a forest: According to Psychology Today, “The Japanese tradition of shinrin-yoku, or ‘forest bathing,’ has inspired the modern concept of ‘forest therapy,’ or walking in the forest as a way to improve health and mood.” Several studies over the past decade have found that being in a forest can lead to a relaxed and healthy well-being, both physically and mentally, and can even reduce blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol and boost the immune system.

Don’t look in the mirror: Wait, what? Can you go a few days, or maybe a week, without looking in the mirror? It seems we are always inspecting ourselves, finding wrinkles, dark spots, eye bags, etc. What if we took time away from that reflection? Check out the benefits of this unique and healing challenge here.

Your George Fox Wellness Committee wishes you a fantastic and healthy May. Stay tuned for upcoming events!

Candidates needed for research study on knee pain

Wednesday, April 24th, 2024

Do you suffer from knee pain and are over the age of 50? You may very well be an ideal candidate for a research study being conducted by Rebecca Dobler, a faculty member in the university’s Department of Physical Therapy.

The purpose of the study is to determine the influences of peak effort in participants with knee pain and/or knee osteoarthritis during a one-minute sit-to-stand test, and new approaches in knee pain education. The research is being done in conjunction with A.T. Still University to fulfill dissertation requirements of the principal investigator.

We are seeking participants who are over 50 with either self-declared knee pain or documented knee OA from a provider. An initial phone screening will be completed to determine your eligibility. The study will be conducted at the Medical Sciences Building at 448 Werth Blvd., in Newberg.

Please call 503-554-2466 or email gotkneesdpt@georgefox.edu for more information.

Here are today’s ‘Bite-Sized Wellness’ ideas

Monday, April 22nd, 2024

Time for some more bite-sized wellness ideas from the Wellness Committee! There are only four this week, but they are solid.

  • Social media detox: Give yourself the freedom and peace of staying off of social media for a few days. Check out the benefits here.
  • Practice gratitude: Focus on the areas of your life where you feel much gratitude. This could be people, your home, your health, your faith. See how it works here.
  • Pay someone a compliment: This may seem like a wellness tip for others, but don’t they always say it is better to give than to receive? Try it out.
  • Practice forgiveness: This can be a tough one, but think of someone whom you can genuinely forgive. Christ forgave us and asked us to forgive. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Check out this article from Harvard University on the power of forgiveness.

You are worth it!
