Retirement plan contribution percentage error on April 30 pay day

Monday, May 7th, 2012

The university’s retirement plan contribution was scheduled to change from 9 percent to 6 percent on the April 30 pay day. However, due to an error in the PeopleSoft settings, the contribution remained at 9 percent. To offset this additional 3 percent contribution on your April pay, only 3 percent of your May 31 pay will be contributed. Thereafter, the contribution will correctly be 6 percent. The PeopleSoft benefit table has been set up for 3 percent on May 31 and 6 percent beginning June 30, to ensure that this situation will not occur again.

We very much apologize for this issue. If you have any questions about it, please contact Lisa Burton or Peggy Kilburg.

Wednesday is deadline to sign up for American Heart Association walk

Monday, May 7th, 2012

If you are interested in taking part in the American Heart Association’s Heart the Stroke Walk on Saturday, May 19, please e-mail Peggy Kilburg (pkilburg@georgefox.edu) by 1 p.m. this Wednesday, May 9.

This fun, family-friendly event will take place in Portland along the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade. The 5K walk (or run if you prefer) promotes exercise and raises funds for cardiovascular disease research and initiatives that promote prevention, treatment and better care for stroke and heart disease patients.

Festivities begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m. After the walk, you can take your kids to the Kids Zone to enjoy some fun activities. There will also be CPR demonstrations and free blood pressure screenings. Food tents will be available for all participants.

George Fox is pulling together volunteers to support Mohan Nair’s team. Nair is the chief innovation officer at Regence and was executive in residence for the School of Business last fall. He is a friend of Robin Baker and is working to build a strong team for this event. Robin will be at Boise’s commencement that weekend. However, he is showing his support for Mohan and this event by making a $700 donation to his team and will contribute a $10 sponsorship to each of the first 10 employees who volunteer to join Mohan’s team.

To volunteer, please e-mail Peggy and be sure to mark your calendar for May 19. Participants will each get a free T-shirt, so please include your T-shirt size in your e-mail. More information is available about the event at this link.

University participants sought for American Heart Association walk May 19

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

We’re looking for a 10 good walkers or runners to represent George Fox in the American Heart Association’s Heart & Stroke Walk, scheduled Saturday, May 19, in Portland along the Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade.

Mohan Nair, chief innovation officer at Regence and executive in residence for the School of Business last fall, is working to build a strong team for this event. Because Robin Baker considers Mohan a colleague, innovator, mentor and friend, he is encouraging George Fox employees to sign up for this event.

Robin will be in Boise that weekend for commencement and unable to personally participate, so to show his support for Mohan and this event, he is making a $700 donation to his team and will contribute a $10 sponsorship to each of the first 10 employees who volunteer to walk/run on Mohan’s team.

This 5K walk (or run) is a healthy, fun, family-friendly event that promotes exercise in our communities and raises funds for cardiovascular disease research and for initiatives that promote prevention, treatment and better care for stroke and heart disease patients. No fundraising is required, although it is certainly an option. Kids and pets on leashes (just to be clear, only pets need to be on leashes) are welcome.

But wait: there’s more! This is not just a walk. Festivities begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 10 a.m. After the walk, you can take your kids to the Kids Zone to enjoy some fun activities. And on a more serious note for adults, learn about your heart health with free CPR demonstrations and blood pressure screenings. Food tents will be available for all participants – with complimentary small sandwiches, various snacks and food and beverage samples.

To volunteer for Mohan’s team, please send an e-mail to Peggy Kilburg and mark your calendar for May 19.

More information is available about this event at this link. Please e-mail Peggy if you can join us in this event.

Annual Phase II event open for viewing this week

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Plant Services is hosting its annual Phase II event this week. Items will be open for viewing in the Macy basement between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, May 2-3, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 4.

At the end of every school year, many students leave behind good usable items for those who need them. These items often include blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, little tables, etc.

To help keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of our resources, Phase II was initiated. Many students have benefited from these items. For example, summer work-study students often find items they need for apartment living.

After students and staff view these items, they are donated to local charities.

Portland wireless changes effective Monday, April 30

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

The wireless network foxguest is being replaced with foxpublic and will be upgraded to WPA2 for better encryption and security. If you are currently using foxguest, you will be required to move to either foxwifi or foxpublic.

We encourage students and employees to use foxwifi and visitors to the campus to use foxpublic. Please contact Josiah with Portland Center IT at 503-554-6127 if you need assistance connecting to wireless. The wireless password can be found on the main page of MyGFU.

The Portland Center will see both foxguest and foxpublic wireless for a one-week transition period.

Employees who connect to foxwifi wireless at the Portland Center will no longer need to use VPN to access their desktop computer or files on the administrative network (foxserve, printing, K drive). You will still need VPN for off-campus access to these resources.

Attention supervisors: Student time sheets needed in HR by May 2

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Student supervisors: Would you please submit your students’ April time sheets as soon as your students finish their last work shifts and no later than Wednesday, May 2? This due date is a little earlier than usual because we won’t have our wonderful student employees here to help process this payroll.

A few reminders:

If your student has school-year hours that are continuing into the first few days of May, please include these hours on a separate May academic year time sheet and submit it to HR as soon as they are done for the year.

A quick checklist of items regarding time sheets:

  • Please be sure the student’s name, ID number and cost center number are legible.
  • Please total them, sign them and be sure the students did as well. (If a student leaves without signing his or her time sheet, please send it to HR anyway.)
  • To keep us in compliance with Federal Work Study regulations, please be sure that if you ask students to deliver their own time sheets, you first place the sheets in a sealed envelope.

If you have any questions, contact Melodee Powers at mpowers@georgefox.edu.

Thanks for all your work this past year in attending to these details. Without you doing your part, it would have been tough to meet our monthly payrolls.

Security services is striving to provide you with the opportunity to get involved by joining our Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT). We will be hosting training daily from 8 a.m. to noon the week of May 7-12 in EHS 125.

Volunteers will be the first on-the-scene emergency responders to an event that happens on campus, especially when firefighters, police and public safety are overwhelmed with requests for help and could be slowed down by impassable streets and other damage.

In a large-scale disaster, George Fox needs to be prepared to be self-sufficient, too. This is why we are providing this training. Become part of the team and be prepared.

More information is available at this link, and you can also sign up for the upcoming training in May via the link.
