As our new international students are settling into their classes and establishing relationships, we would like to connect them with an American family who would serve as a friend and a point of contact outside of campus. Our past students have highly valued this opportunity to know an American family as a friend. Would you consider serving as a Fox Friendship Family?
The minimum requirements are to provide your telephone number to your students, host the students in your home for at least two meals during the school year, be available for regular contact with your students, and commit to pray for your students. If you would like to continue your relationship with the students who stayed with you during orientation, please let us know by calling or e-mailing Alex Pia (apia@georgefox.edu; ext. 2643) or Dianna McIntyre (dmcintyr@georgefox.edu; 2649) as soon as possible.
For those of you who choose to be a Fox Friendship Family, we would like to invite you as our guest for a dessert for families and students on Monday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room. You will not need to bring anything. Please save the date.

If you have not already completed the paperwork for students you have hired or rehired this fall, please do so just as soon as you can and send it to HR. For all student employees, this includes an offer letter. For students who have not worked (for GFU) before, a W-4 and I-9 are also needed, and a direct deposit form is encouraged (but not required).
Even though a student submits a time sheet, he or she cannot be set up in the payroll system and be paid without these documents. Please take a few minutes to be sure this paperwork has been submitted for all of your student employees today if possible and no later than Monday, Oct. 1.
As always, we very much appreciate your efforts with and on behalf of our students.

Applications for the spring online faculty Professional Learning Community (PLC) “Teaching the Big Ideas: Ethics” are due Monday, Oct. 1.
Key features of this PLC:
- Three to four synchronous sessions supplemented by asynchronous collaboration and sharing (group members will set dates and times for the synchronous sessions)
- Share how you approach the teaching of ethics
- Get ideas and resources from other faculty in other fields who also teach ethics
- Consider how various understandings of faith integration inform the teaching of ethics across the university
- Gather resources and suggestions to share with all GFU faculty
- Receive a $300 honorarium for participating
The online format will provide access to those who typically cannot attend PLC offerings, and this learning community will have the added benefit of allowing faculty who are not experienced in online teaching tools to practice with the format in a low-risk, collegial context.
Questions? Contact facilitator Gary Sehorn (gsehorn@georgefox.edu).
The application is posted at the Faculty Development webpage. Complete and return to Brenda Burg (bburg@georgefox.edu) by 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1.

Don’t forget tonight’s presentation by Lutaaya Abul, director of African Hearts Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda, at 7 p.m. in EHS 102.
Lutaaya grew up in the gutters of Kampala, started to attend a church, became involved in music, and started the African Hearts Orphanage. The organization’s target population is children who are living on the street, many of whom have been orphaned by HIV or abandoned or victimized by family violence. Our Juniors Abroad groups visit the orphanage when we travel to East Africa.
The organization currently runs two homes housing former street children in Kampala and Ssenge. Children living in these homes are taught the Bible and are provided with shelter, food, love and education.
Questions? Contact Lynn Scott at lscott@georgefox.edu.
