Don’t forget to join us for the university’s fifth annual Dalton Lecture tomorrow (Thursday) as Dr. William Phillips, a 1997 Nobel Prize winner in physics, presents at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. The free presentation is entitled “Ordinary Faith, Ordinary Science,” in which he speak on the common ground shared between faith and science. A George Fox student research poster session and dessert reception will follow Phillips’ lecture.
Among the questions Phillips will address are queries that can be particularly troublesome for a Christian: “Why is there suffering if God is good?†“What about all the terrible things done in the name of religion?†and “What about all the good people who are on a different path of faith than Christianity?â€
Phillips will also speak Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12, at 3:30 p.m. on the topic “Time, Einstein and the Coolest Stuff in the Universe” in Bauman Auditorium.
The Dalton Lecture Series is sponsored by the Department of Biology and Chemistry. More information can be found on the Dalton Lecture page.

Make plans to attend a free concert commemorating a recent upgrade to the university’s pipe organ in Bauman Auditorium. The Organ Dedication Concert, featuring musicians Dan Miller on organ and Kenn Willson on piano, will take the Bauman stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20. General seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The university recently purchased a Rodgers Digital Organ. By the use of digital technology, the organ’s original pipes have been connected to the digital organ. In doing so, the university preserved the original pipe organ installed in the early 1980s while greatly enhancing the quality of sound.
The program will include the selections Toccata and Fugue in D-minor by Bach, a patriotic tribute including the Navy Hymn, a medley from The Phantom of the Opera and one piano and organ duet on the tune Lord of the Dance (arranged by Joel Raney).
To learn more about the performers, visit this page.

About Dr. Phillips
In 1997, Phillips was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light, along with Steven Chu and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji. One result of the development of laser-cooling techniques was the first observation, in 1995, of the Bose-Einstein condensate, a new state of matter originally predicted 70 years earlier by Albert Einstein and the Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose.
Phillips will also speak Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12, at 3:30 p.m. on the topic “Time, Einstein and the Coolest Stuff in the Universe” in Bauman Auditorium.

Items and information commonly missed/excluded when submitting Expense Reimbursement Requests to financial affairs:
- Number each receipt consecutively and put that number in the “Item #” column, one line per receipt.
- Give an explanation of line-items, particularly noting the business purpose of each expenditure. This is critical and is an IRS requirement for an “Accountable Reimbursement Plan,” as noted in the IRS rules which this comes under. Use more than one line per transaction, if needed. A “business purpose” is a short note on the form that says what the cost is and why it is related to what we do at George Fox. An example is, “Food purchased for department volunteers.” What not to say is, “Food.” This would not be acceptable and would be rejected if ever audited by the IRS. If you are traveling, be sure to include the destination in the description column (e.g. “Fundraising conference – Denver, Colo.”)
- For reimbursement of personal auto usage, list the actual miles traveled in the “Miles” column. The spreadsheet will automatically calculate the total in the next column.
- Any meals being reimbursed must, by IRS rules, include the names of those at the meal, their connection to George Fox, and the business purpose for the meal. The exception to this is when meals are incurred while traveling on university business. To be as careful as possible, you should carefully note that this is the case.
- The person being reimbursed must print, sign and date the form in the appropriate place near the bottom of the form.
- The person who approves spending for the one being reimbursed must approve this report by printing, signing and dating in the appropriate place at the bottom of the form. If the amount being reimbursed is over the amount that the budget manager can approve, the ERR must go to the next level for approval, according to George Fox approval policies.
- If you need to be reimbursed from more than one fund, department or program, use separate ERR forms for each cost center. Approvals would also have to come from the budget managers where appropriate.
Questions? Contact Matt Hammar at mhammar@georgefox.edu.
