C.S. Lewis expert from Oxford speaks on campus April 9

Save the date! On Thursday, April 9, scholar Jason Lepojärvi will present a lecture, “C.S. Lewis’s Famous Disagreement with Augustine on Love,” at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Lepojärvi is a junior research fellow in theology at St. Benet’s Hall, Oxford, and a former president of the Oxford C.S. Lewis Society. Born to a Canadian mother and a Finnish father, he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Helsinki. More details about him can be found here. The lecture is sponsored by the Office of the President and the William Penn Honors Program.

Do you know a high school student who may be interested in the William Penn Honors Program? An honors program reception will be held immediately following the lecture. Additionally, a special visit day event will be held on April 10 during Bruin Preview.

Interfaith dialogue on human rights hosted tonight

What do Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Baha’ism teach us about human rights? Join us for a panel discussion on the role of human rights within diverse faith traditions, at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday) in the Cap and Gown Room on the Newberg campus. There is no charge to attend.

Hosted by Sarita Gallagher (Christian studies), the panel includes George Fox professor Paul Anderson (biblical and Quaker studies); Rabbi Joseph Wolf of Huvurah Shalom; Arif Humayun, founder of Circle of Peace and member of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy; and Fridoon Rahimi, retired pediatrician and member of the Baha’i faith.

The meeting, the fourth annual Circle of Peace Seminar, is co-sponsored by George Fox University and Circle of Peace. For more information, contact Paula Hampton in the College of Christian Studies at 503-554-2650.

BlueZone Store closed this Friday

Hardware purchasing reminders

Purchases of the following items with university funds requires involvement from IT and approval of the appropriate dean or vice president:

  • Laptop and desktop computers
  • Tablets
  • Any individual hardware item over $1,000

Please note that, effective immediately, hardware purchases using university funds may not be made by credit card (personal or university). These purchases should be coordinated through IT. This is to ensure that proper approval processes are followed, that hardware purchases meet the standards required for institutional hardware, and to ensure that the university can get the best pricing for hardware.

The financial affairs office will not approve expense requests or university credit card transactions for hardware purchases.

Full-time administrative assistant needed in IDEA Center this summer

The IDEA Center is looking for a full-time, temporary administrative assistant to work May through July. Do you normally have the summer off but would be interested in working this summer, or do you know of someone who might be qualified and interested in filling this position?

A summary of the position:

  • Provide administrative support to IDEA Center staff
  • Facilitate IDEA Center front office processes and triage workflow to ensure smooth and efficient operation
  • Facilitate communication through a variety of established avenues
  • Provide strong customer service in receiving and screening a wide range of visitors/callers/emails in order to communicate services; schedule appointments and oversees client intake
  • Support summer Genesis events when needed
  • Manage daily approving and updating in our Bruin Careers job posting site and Internship Module program
  • Oversee summer data collecting and assessment projects
  • Attend office staff meetings and maintain current working knowledge in the basics of career and academic planning services and resources

A high level of technology proficiency and basic PeopleSoft knowledge is needed.

Dean of Saint John’s Theological Seminary speaks on campus Thursday

All are invited to a presentation on The Saint John’s Bible tomorrow (Thursday) when Bill Cahoy, dean of the Saint John’s Theological Seminary, will be on campus to present a talk on the Bible titled “Theology, Art and Imagination.” The free session meets from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. Chapel credit is available for students, and refreshments will be served.

Bufford presents Spring Faculty Lecture on March 10

The university community is invited to the 2015 Spring Faculty Lecture, “Encountering Grace,” featuring Rodger Bufford, PhD, professor of psychology in the Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology. The presentation will explore the “theology of grace” and the “psychology of grace.”

Join us on Tuesday, March 10, for the presentation. The lecture runs from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in Hoover 105, and refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee.

Prior to the lecture that evening, the 2015 Spring Richter Student Scholars Symposium is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. Student scholars from George Fox graduate and undergraduate programs will present their research in a conversational poster format. Refreshments are included.
