Mr. Darwin’s Tree, the acclaimed British one-man play about the life and work of Charles Darwin, will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Produced by Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford (SCIO) and sponsored by George Fox’s science and religion clubs, the play aims to enhance the conversation on science and religion.

Written by noted playwright and director Murray Watts (The Miracle Maker, KJB: The Book that Changed the World, The Dream) and starring British film, TV and theatre actor Andrew Harrison (Dorian Gray, Miss Marple, Beyond Narnia), Mr. Darwin’s Tree presents a very human and very real Charles Darwin, one who wrestled with the challenges that his theories posed for traditional beliefs.

It also presents Darwin’s wife, Emma, as an intelligent and articulate representative of Christian faith. In doing so, the play rejects the “straw man” effigies of Darwin presented by both his extreme protagonists and antagonists, providing the opportunity for lively engagement, thoughtful conversations and fresh explorations.

The performance will mark the play’s first tour of the U.S. since it first premiered in 2009 at Westminster Abbey in England. The April 21 show will be followed by a reception and discussion with the playwright and leading campus academics.

The MLRC and Portland Center libraries are now accepting debit and credit cards to purchase print cards. No more digging in your pockets or wallet for that extra change to purchase a print card. You can now purchase the print card you need with your debit/credit card.

The IT Service Desk can not only accept your debit or credit card, but Apple and Android Pay is also available. So if you need a new ID card, power adapter or to pay for those unexpected repair parts you will no longer need to provide cash or a check. Just put it on the card.

We will continue to accept cash and checks through June 30, 2016. Beginning July 1, 2016, these locations will only accept your electronic forms payment (debit/credit/touch pay) and ID cards will no longer be charged to student accounts.

The university’s Center for Peace and Justice welcomes Stuart Willcuts, Mercy Corps country director in Ukraine, to speak at the 2016 John Woolman Peacemaking Forum tomorrow (Tuesday). Our theme this year is “Fostering Peace and Justice Through the Lens of Service.”

Stuart, a 1972 alumnus of George Fox, has dedicated his life to promoting peace and reconciliation during complex humanitarian crisis events. He will speak on restoring hope to the most vulnerable during chapel in Bauman Auditorium at 10:50 a.m.

The evening event, at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105, is open to the community. Stuart will share real-life stories about his courageous work as a disciple of Christ serving the world. He will also be presented the John Woolman Peacemaking Award for his lifetime of international humanitarian service to those who have been marginalized by and suffered from war and oppression.

Yes, for only the second time in history postage rates decreased as of yesterday, April 10, 2016 (for the first time since 1919, when postage rates decreased from 3 cents to 2 cents).

New postage rates

• Domestic 1-ounce letter: 47 cents (formerly 49 cents)
• Postcard: 34 cents (formerly 35 cents)
• International 1-ounce letters and postcards: $1.15 (formerly $1.20)

But what about the stamps I already have?
Your “Forever” stamps that you purchased for 49 cents each are now worth 47 cents. If you buy a “Forever” stamp after April 10, the cost to you is 47 cents. Stamps that have a printed denomination on them will still be worth whatever price is marked on the stamp.

All Priority shipping prices remain the same . . .   but First Class packages, Media, Standard Post and Library prices are all decreasing. Be sure to stop at Mail Services and have a trained clerk help you with your shipping needs.

Do you know what to do in an active shooter situation? If your department or building has not taken an active shooter training, please consider scheduling this training for this summer.

It will be specific to your building and will consist of classroom instruction on what to do in an incident like this. There will be a simulation so you will know what to do and where to go in your building.

Summer is a great time to schedule a CPR/First Aid/AED class! If nobody in your department or building is certified in CPR/First Aid/AED, please consider scheduling a course this summer before the fall semester begins.

The course lasts eight hours, and you will get hands-on experience in basic first aid as well as CPR and how to use an AED. Contact Mark Stone (mstone@georgefox.edu) in security services to schedule a class today.

The university community is invited to attend a free lecture featuring William Schneidewind, author and professor of biblical studies at UCLA, tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. The lecture title is “A Short History of the Word of God: Old Testament, Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament, Early and Modern Church.”

Schneidewind serves as the chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and holds the Kershaw Endowed Chair of Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Studies. He received a BA in religion from George Fox University (1984), an MA in historical geography from Jerusalem University College, and a PhD in Bible and Ancient Near East from Brandeis University (1992).

He has been a visiting scholar at the Hebrew University and a research fellow at the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem. Schniedewind received George Fox’s 2013 Outstanding Alumnus Award. He is the author of five books, including How the Bible Became a Book, which has been translated into seven languages.

The William Penn Honors Program, College of Christian Studies and the George Fox Evangelical Seminary are sponsoring this lecture. Chapel credit is available.
