Interested in learning more about technology and how it applies to the educational experience? You are invited to a free conference hosted by the Oregon Technology in Education Network (OTEN) on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Pacific University’s Forest Grove campus. George Fox is a founding member of the OTEN consortium.

The gathering will feature peer-reviewed presentations from university faculty and other educators from across Oregon and the Northwest. We would like to encourage faculty and staff who have been innovating with their teaching to register for the free half-day conference (8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.).

Dr. Simon Conway Morris, a professor at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St. John’s College, will speak on the topic of evolutionary palaeobiology along with the question of “Inevitable Humans in a Lonely Universe?” Admission is free.

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the eighth annual Dalton Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Dr. Simon Conway Morris, a professor at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St. John’s College, will speak on the topic of evolutionary palaeobiology along with the question of “Inevitable Humans in a Lonely Universe?” Admission is free.

In the presentation, Morris will discuss the implication of all species (including humans) are historical accidents that will find no direct counterpart whilst pointing to the Fermi Paradox and how this raises alarming possibilities. He will also give a scientific talk at 3 p.m. on Feb. 22 in Wood-Mar Auditorium entitled, “Our earliest ancestors: Cambrian deuterostomes or just weird wonders?”

Morris was elected to the Royal Society in 1990, and his principal academic interests are in the Cambrian “explosion.” He has traveled widely and received many awards. He is active in public outreach and delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 1996, as well as the Second Boyle Lecture.

Finance has extended its “In-box hours” by installing a drop box for items that need to be reviewed or processed but weren’t able to be delivered during our normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This includes any and all items that would typically be dropped in the finance department in-box located in our lobby.

Please be sure that all items are contained in a closed envelope so nothing is misplaced or separated. This is very important because there are no envelopes provided at the drop box, so please plan accordingly. The drop box will be emptied each morning and distributed appropriately within the department.

Gather around the fireplace with coffee and light refreshments to hear artist Jennifer Lichtenberg discuss her process and answer questions about her “I am afraid​” ​art ​exhibit on display for Black History Month beginning Feb. 9.

About the exhibit
During the 2016-17 academic year, the Graduate School of Counseling staff and faculty committed​ ​themselves​ ​to a book group, reading through and processing the work of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me. In the book, Coates addresses what it means to inhabit an African American body in today’s America. Jennifer created “I am afraid” in response to Coates’ work.

The William Penn Honors Program invites you to come hear Donald L. Drakeman, a distinguished research professor in the Constitutional Studies Program at Notre Dame, a fellow in health management at Cambridge University, and a venture partner with Advent Venture Partners.

He will be speaking on the Newberg campus at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, in the Edwards-Holman Science Center. The topic of his presentation is “Death Sentence for the Life Sciences? The Humanities and the Future of Medicine.”

Drakeman is the cofounder of two biotechnology companies that have created new treatments for cancer. His most recent book is Why We Need the Humanities: Life Science, Law and the Common Good.

Ryan is currently the director of human-centered design at Amazon. He is responsible for design and branding across Amazon Operations, including Prime Now, Amazon Flex, Hub by Amazon, Amazon Locker, Transportation, Global Fulfillment and more. His group has studios in Seattle; Sunnyvale, California; Minneapolis, Austin, Texas; and Portland. He loves creating something from nothing and bringing talented people together around a shared vision.

Bob Gilmore, who began as a professor at George Fox in 1964 and who, in recent years, was known as a Spanish tutor and the man who would sing Happy Birthday to You to employees over the phone, died on Sunday, Feb. 4. A memorial service for Bob will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at Newberg Friends Church, 307 S. College St.

The university community is invited to attend.

The music of Star Wars, Bach and Scott Joplin will fill the university’s Bauman Auditorium when a Monster Piano Concert takes the stage for the 12th annual Bösendorfer Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 15.

The evening will feature 16 performers playing eight pianos, on many occasions simultaneously. Among those performing will be local organist Dan Miller, the piano duet team of Eduard Gavril and Sorin Frisan, the university’s String Ensemble and Keyboard Ensemble, George Fox alumni, and members of George Fox music professor Kenn Willson’s recruiting studio.

The program will feature pieces by John Williams, from the Star Wars films; Joplin’s ragtime classic The Entertainer; a Bach Concerto; the music of Dave Brubeck; Beethoven’s Für Elise, with a jazz arrangement for four pianos; and Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, featuring four pianos.

All employees and students are entitled to one free ticket. All tickets are reserved seating and are available at this link or at the University Box Office by calling 503-554-3844. To get your free ticket online, click “Okay” after making your seat selection, select “GFU Employee” or “GFU Student” in the drop-down menu on the ticket selection screen, and proceed to checkout.

Additional tickets are $12 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12.
