Runners: Sign up for free Zoom webinar on reducing injuries

Wednesday, November 4th, 2020

Join the College of Physical Therapy for a free Zoom webinar, “Three Key Principles to Reduce Running-Related Injuries,” at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20.

Presenting will be Dr. Alison Modafferi, owner and physical therapist at Run the World PT & Performance. This is designed for all runners, whether you are new to running, run recreationally, or are more advanced.

The one-hour virtual presentation will cover three evidence-based principles to help reduce running-related injuries. We will discuss load management, variability and tendon stiffness and how they relate to running and injuries. We’ll also discuss practices to reduce injury risk.

Our reason for hosting? There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding running-related injuries. Together, George Fox University and Run the World have developed a framework backed by research to keep runners healthy.

Attend virtual discussion: ‘The Academic Vocation in a Post-2020 World: An Ecumenical Dialogue’

Monday, November 2nd, 2020

Sue O’Donnell, the campus representative to the board for the Christian Scholar’s Review, wants to invite anyone who is interested to a panel discussion. As you may know, George Fox is one of CSR’s most consistent sponsors, which makes this discussion relevant to our community.

Christian Scholar’s Review is pleased to announce “The Academic Vocation in a Post-2020 World: An Ecumenical Dialogue,” a virtual panel discussion on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8 to 9:15 a.m. (PST)

The event is available at no charge. In the interest of security, participants need to register here. Shortly after doing so, registrants will receive a link for the event. For security reasons, the organizers ask that people register and then use the link they receive.

Panel members will consider questions such as:

  • Will 2020 be the beginning of a tipping point for Christ-centered higher education?
  • How will our institutions align their organizational callings with the vocational calling that faculty believe that they have received in this environment?
  • What has 2020 taught us to hold onto and what must be transformed for institutions to survive with their mission intact?
  • Following a 55-minute discussion, audience members will also have the chance to pose questions.

For further details, please click here and/or contact the publisher of Christian Scholar’s Review, Todd C. Ream, at todd.ream@taylor.edu.

COVID-19 tests available by appointment

Sunday, November 1st, 2020

The Health and Counseling Center has three different COVID-19 testing options available, some of which are free. If you feel sick and have any of these symptoms…

  • Fever of 100.4 or greater
  • Difficulty breathing (unrelated to Asthma or physical exertion)
  • Loss of sense of taste or smell

… and believe you may have COVID-19, please call the Health and Counseling Center to discuss your options or make an appointment at 503-554-2340.

The free test is a nose swab (not the deep nose probe), and is a rapid test with results in 15 minutes. This antigen test is most accurate at the onset of symptoms and up to seven days after onset.

This test does not meet the requirement for travel into the state of Hawaii and may not meet other travel clearance requirements; therefore, we will not be offering this test for travel purposes.

Questions? Contact the Health Center at the above number.

Be aware of OHA’s updated face-covering guidelines

Sunday, November 1st, 2020

The Oregon Health Authority recently updated its face-covering guidelines (Oct. 19, 2020):

“Masks, face coverings or face shields are required at all times for employees, contractors and volunteers in public and private workplaces, including hallways, bathrooms, classrooms, elevators, lobbies, break rooms, meeting rooms and other common and shared spaces, unless employees, contractors or volunteers are at a private, individual workspace not shared with other people.”

Key changes include:

  • Face coverings are now required in all conference rooms.
  • Mesh masks, lace masks, and masks with valves for exhalation are prohibited.
  • Face coverings with openings, holes, gaps, or vents are prohibited.

We appreciate your compliance with these guidelines as we work together to keep one another healthy. If you have questions, contact the COVID operations team at cot@georgefox.edu.

Please follow COVID-19 snack guidelines when eating on campus

Sunday, November 1st, 2020

Homemade or store-bought food and beverage snacks may be shared with other employees or students on campus so long as these guidelines are followed:

  • Everyone should wash their hands before and after preparing, serving, and eating food. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • For items like a shared bag of chips or salad, use a clean utensil to get the item out or tip the bag to get the item.
  • Use single-use options or identify one person to serve sharable items like salad dressings and condiments, so that multiple people are not handling the items.
  • If there is not one person identified to serve food, discourage sharing items like a serving spoon; rather, each person should use their own clean utensil to dish out the food.
  • Follow all guidelines regarding space capacity limits and physical distancing, and be sure to wear face coverings (when not eating).
  • Remember Bon Appetit is the Newberg campus’s exclusive caterer and is happy to discuss your food and beverage needs for meetings and events.

If you have questions, email the COVID operations team at cot@georgefox.edu.
