This year, University Recreation is assessing our intramural sports program, and we’re looking to hear from you! Whether or not you play already, your input matters to us.

Your feedback on the fitness center was invaluable to us last year and resulted in the purchase of a multi-station cable machine and development of the exercise coaching program, among other things. We’re looking forward to hearing from you how we can continue to improve your experience with intramural sports!

In January 2024, selected George Fox students are traveling to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The Sundance festival is widely regarded as the most prestigious annual showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers.

Alongside the Sundance Festival, George Fox students will also be attending the Windrider Forum, a venue for conversations about the intersections of faith and film.

• To apply, visit this link.
• We will be attending during the final full week of January (tentatively Jan. 21-27). Attending students will be required to notify professors in advance of anticipated absences, and create appropriate academic work plans.
• Personal costs will be approximately $975 (not including food and incidentals), depending on airline and lodging costs.
• You do not need to be a cinematic arts or communication major to attend. Applications from all full-time George Fox undergraduate students will be considered, but we will be limited to traveling with approximately 10 selected students.
• A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required, as well as a thoughtful explanation of how this event would contribute to your future personal, academic, and/or professional goals.
• Applications received by Monday, April 24, will receive first consideration.
• During the spring 2024 semester, CINE 285/485, a selected topics course, will be offered on “Independent Cinema,” and will connect to the Sundance trip experience. Students will have the option (this is not a requirement) of registering for this course to receive credit connected to the Sundance and later semester experiences.

Is there someone at George Fox who has made a difference in your college experience? Someone who ignited a spark that made you want to learn more than you thought you could, someone who walked alongside you during a difficult season, or a person who has been a mentor?

Take a moment to write an email, e-card, or traditional “thank you” card to that professor, RA, tutor, supervisor, or other influential person. Try to be specific as you describe how this person has contributed to your life. Students in Newberg can stop by the Academic Resource Center (ARC) to pick up a blank card.

Come watch the Concert Choir and Master Chorus perform, with brass and organ, Gloria by John Rutter. The performance is free and starts at 3 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium this Sunday, April 23.

Stressed during finals? Come by to get a massage from a doctor of physical therapy student!

Our mission is to improve our community’s health by offering discounted massages to students and employees ($20) and community members ($25). We are offering a 25-minute massage this Friday, April 21, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Medical Sciences Building (448 Werth Blvd., in Newberg).

Your contribution will help fund our medical service trip to Uganda in May. Donations and tips are also welcome, there will be a tip jar on site. Register for a massage using this Google Form.

One of the off-campus program options for George Fox students is the Oregon Extension, deep in the Cascades of Southern Oregon.

A professor from the program will be on campus today and tomorrow, at a table in Canyon Commons today (Tuesday) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and hosting an info session in Stevens 109 on Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

In this 17-credit fall semester program, students live in cabins heated with wood stoves and experience a different way to learn, one course at a time. Everything is designed to work on habits of deep learning and learning without the frenzy. You can find out more at oregonextension.org.

At the OE, the internet is not a way of life. Instead, there is a big vegetable garden. Chickens, turkeys, milking goats, and cheese-making are part of community life. After intensive periods of study, students get off campus to backpack in rugged mountains, relax at the Oregon Coast, and explore San Francisco.

Credit can be earned in environmental studies, art history, literature, political science, religious studies, history, psychology, biology, sociology, and philosophy.

The Spring Awards Convocation Chapel is tomorrow (Tuesday)! Join us in Bauman Auditorium at 10:50 a.m. to worship together and celebrate at this final chapel of the year.

The winners of the Faculty Achievement Awards for Undergraduate Teaching and Undergraduate Research & Scholarship will be announced, and Provost Andrea Scott will give a special year-end message to our students and graduates.

We’ll also hear from our student music ensemble, and professor Aaron Barnhart will lead us in worship. Don’t miss it!

Campus Public Safety will be conducting its annual bicycle roundup starting Wednesday, May 3.

Here are the details:

• At the end of spring semester, a university-wide bicycle cleanup is conducted. Bikes that are illegally parked, unregistered or inoperable will be impounded. Bicycle racks need to be cleared to do routine maintenance to the bike racks and surrounding areas.
• Bicycles may not be stored on campus during the summer semester. Claims for impounded bikes may be made at the CPS office.
• If you are staying on campus over the summer and plan to keep a bike here, please stop by Campus Public Safety to get a sticker ID. Move your bike to the rack that is closest to your summer housing.
• Impounded bicycles will be kept at CPS for 60 days and then donated to local charities at the discretion of the Campus Public Safety office. Junk bikes will be recycled.

Our cinematic arts students have been hard at work all year creating short films through a variety of courses. There are several categories the films fall under, including Live Action Film, Animated Film, Fresh Film (from first-year students), Narrative, and Documentary/Non-Fiction.

Join us for “Real Talk,” an event created for the George Fox community by students from the Act Six Cadre 16, tonight (Monday) from 6 to 7 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101.

Come learn about the upbringing and the obstacles that alumna Khadija Bruce went through. She is an elementary school teacher for Portland Public Schools and plans to climb the education ladder in order to restructure our educational system. Her goal is for quality education to be equitable for anyone.
