Newly Updated Fitness Center Information

Monday, July 30th, 2018

We trust you are excited about the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27 (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice most of the space has been cleared in anticipation of remodeling it for athletics’ use since the HSC will be opening soon. Due to this upcoming remodeling of the Wheeler fitness center space, some equipment has been moved into the adjacent dance studio space (Wheeler 211) for general student and employee use until the HSC opens. The squat racks are also still available for use and are in their original spot.

There are more limited hours for this interim space in Wheeler, as it will now be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Saturday and Sunday). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this transitional period and trust that the new space in the HSC will make it worth the wait!

Questions? Contact Rob Simpson (simpsonr@georgefox.edu) regarding the HSC or Adam Puckett (apuckett@georgefox.edu) regarding the Wheeler Sports Center space.

California is final stop on culinary journey along Route 66

Monday, July 30th, 2018

We’ve reached the end of the road on our culinary journey along Route 66. Our last stop is tomorrow (Wednesday), and we’ll be featuring California. We have a fantastic menu planned: California grilled fish tacos with traditional toppings, melon salad, and jicama slaw, along with dessert and a beverage, for just $6.95. Lunch will be served between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the patio outside the Klages Center.

We’ll also have our raffle drawing after lunch, so be sure to bring along your punch card. Anyone with four or more punches is eligible to enter, and we have a fun prize for the lucky winner.

See you Wednesday!

Important Vehicle Registration and Parking Information for Commuters

Sunday, July 29th, 2018

With the new academic year comes new changes in parking policies. This letter is to inform you of those changes ahead of time so you can act accordingly.

All changes mentioned in this email begin with the 2018-19 academic year. The university, not Campus Public Safety (formerly Security Services), has elected to bill all commuters for your annual parking permit automatically.

Your student account will be charged each semester through Student Financial Services. Additionally, there is an increase in the cost of the parking permit: $100 per semester ($200 annually).

When you go online to register your vehicle on MYGFU, under “GFU Resources,” click on “Vehicle Registration.” There will be no cost shown, and you will enter your vehicle information.

Complete instructions on vehicle registration can be found on Campus Public Safety’s website. Once you have completed the vehicle registration process, your permit will be mailed to you in 14 to 21 days at the mailing address you provided during the vehicle registration process.

For those who live nearby and would rather walk or ride a bike to campus, an online form will be available to request a refund for the permit charge. Please read the form thoroughly to understand the conditions of your refund. Information on where to access this form will be announced in an upcoming Daily Bruin.

Those of you living in the Good Neighbor area, when you bring in the required proof of residence to receive your free parking permit, your information will be submitted to Student Financial Services for a refund of permit charges. Details about parking off-campus can be found on the Off-Campus Parking website.

Please watch this summer for any changes regarding parking policies or permits. Check your George Fox email regularly or you might miss something important.

If you have any questions, please call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090. Details about the university’s parking policies can be found on the Campus Public Safety website: Parking 101.

Access road closed during construction

Friday, July 27th, 2018

The access road that runs in between Gulley Hall, Brandt Hall and Le Shana Hall is now closed for construction of the new residence hall. Access to the Le Shana parking lot is from Fulton St. only. Access to the North St. parking lot for staff and graduate students will continue to be from Villa St. via North St. Pedestrian access between the Le Shana and North St. parking lots is still accessible.

Don’t wait to register your car

Thursday, July 26th, 2018

Juniors and seniors, if you are bringing a car to campus, go to myGFU and register for your commuter or residential parking permit before Monday when the registration portal will open to sophomores. Commuter permits aren’t limited but residential permits are, so don’t delay.

Questions? Out-of-the-box car situation? Contact Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 during business hours or email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.

Important Fitness Center Information

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

Only weeks remain before the opening of the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27, so that student staff can be adequately trained on the new equipment and protocols (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the current fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice that much of the older equipment has been moved out. Sometime in August, the large portion of the space will be remodeled for athletics’ use in light of the addition of women and men’s swimming and the continued growth in the number of student-athletes (currently 20 percent of our undergraduate student population). The smaller portion of the current facility (the free weight area) will be remodeled into a classroom during the fall semester.

Please note that because of remodeling and construction of new space, there will likely be a two- to three-week time frame in August when there will be no fitness center available for general campus use. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience for those who are regularly using this space and trust that the new space in the Hadlock Student Center will make it worth the wait!

We also post photos of things that aren’t usually seen by the majority of staff and students because we are here 24/7! This week alone we’ve posted tips on how to choose the proper life jacket for your summer water activities, hot weather tips for your car, road closures due to the Substation Fire on Highway 97 and I-84, etc.

Last year alone we posted more than 125 posts about safety/traffic/weather/construction alerts/closures, etc., so check us out to be in the know! Residential Parking Permit Information

Wednesday, July 18th, 2018

If you are a sophomore, junior or senior and are planning on registering for a residential parking permit when the vehicle registration portal opens for your class level, please look at the online parking brochure on the Campus Public Safety website before choosing whether you want a Resident West, Resident East or Morse lot permit. For example, Villa Road House has moved from the east side of the campus to the west side, and you’d want a Resident West permit if that was your housing assignment.

Hess Creek is the rough dividing line between Resident East and Resident West housing designations. Once the Resident East parking permits are allotted, then your choices would be the Morse lot on the east side of campus or a Resident West permit until those are assigned.

Be aware of statewide transit tax

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

As of July 1, 2018, you’ll see a new item on your paystub for Oregon’s statewide transit tax. The tax is one-tenth of one percent (.001) — or $1 per $1,000. Your employer will be automatically withholding the tax – just like the personal income tax – so you don’t have to do or change anything. Unlike the personal income tax, there’s no withholding exemption for this tax.

Revenue from the statewide transit tax will go to expanding public transportation throughout Oregon. For more information on how the tax revenues will be used, check out “HB 2017 Funding Package” under “Projects & News” on the Oregon Department of Transportation’s website.

To learn more about the tax itself, visit the Department of Revenue online at oregon.gov/dor.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Kasondra Silva at ksilva@georgefox.edu.

Be aware of tree work being done on campus this week

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

Plant Services continues to do tree work this week in Hess Creek Canyon. Barricades will be used to mark off the work areas. For your safety, do not walk inside the barricaded areas. Intermittent tree work will continue in the quad as well.

Thank you,
