Social work students: Join ‘Diversity Dialogue: A Conversation on Gender’

Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

All social work students are invited to come hear how the predominating messages about gender in evangelical popular culture are negative and limiting, both for women and for men. In this semester’s diversity forum, Melanie Springer Mock, professor of English, considers the source of these messages about gender, and why they can be so damaging, especially to young people seeking their vocations.

Join us at the forum on Monday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Stevens 209.

Melanie believes that evangelical culture’s focus on gender, sex and “biblical manhood and womanhood,” often premised on a misguided interpretation of Scripture, makes it especially difficult for women and men to live in the freedom and grace Jesus offers them.

The diversity forum will provide ample space to consider Christian messaging about gender; to ask questions about what it means for women and men to be created in God’s image; and to think together about how we can create a different world where our lives are not defined by gender roles or even gender identity, but by our own unique callings and gifts.

Film project needs actors for mini-documentary

Monday, November 5th, 2018

We are in need of actors for a mini-documentary that explores spiritual abuse in the church today and what churches are doing to prevent this form of abuse. We have collected stories from people about their experiences, but for safety purposes, we don’t wish to feature them in the film.

To portray them, we’re looking for voice actors who can capture the emotions these people felt. They will be filmed in a silhouette setting, so even if you do not match the target age for a certain role, it is still possible your voice could fit what we are looking for.

These are the roles:

  • Man: (30s or 40s), must be able to portray anger, concern and determination in voice
  • Woman: (mid 20s), must be able to portray isolation, depression and anxiety in voice
  • Woman: (30s), must portray grief, anger and depression in voice
  • Girl: (High school, young 20s), must portray confusion, guilt and shame in voice

We also have two non-speaking roles in which an actor will be seen in our film:

  • Man: (late 20s or in 30s), must act curious and melancholy
  • Woman: (20s), needs to act like a doll or puppet

Only one day of filming will be required for each part. The auditions will be held in Lemmons 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 8. Each person will receive 15 minutes. Please contact Rebekah Springsteel at rspringsteel15@georgefox.edu if you are interested.

All invited to take part in Spoken Word night Thursday

Sunday, November 4th, 2018

Please join us at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 8, in Hoover 105 for a night of Spoken Word. The topic will be “You and I.”

Today we are extremely divided because of gender, race, religion, culture, politics, opinions, etc. This theme was chosen to highlight the division among us, as well as to discuss some ways we can mend the division we have created.

We are still looking for creatives, poets, rappers, quiet souls, etc. to share their truth (we would love for you to stick with the theme, but you have full creative freedom).

Questions/ interested in performing? Contact Tanner Aliff (taliff15@georgefox.edu) or Kaheela Reid (kreid15@georgefox.edu).
