Come join Friendsview intergenerational game night Thursday

This Thursday, Oct. 25, take a fun break from homework to come meet and engage with our retired neighbors just across the street at Friendsview. Ping pong, billiards, shuffleboard, a variety of board and card games, and puzzles will be available!

The residents are looking forward to some new competition (especially ping pong!) and the opportunity to engage with the George Fox community! We’ll meet in the Bauman Auditorium atrium at 6 p.m. to walk over together for this evening of fun.

Final ‘The Government Inspector’ shows run this week

The George Fox theatre department continues its fall comedy The Government Inspector this week. Come join us for a tale of mistaken identity, chaos and hilarity (note: the production does have mature themes).

Student tickets are free on Thursday, Oct. 25. Bring your student ID to the door. Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows. Open captioning will be available the last two shows, on Oct. 27 and 28.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Oct. 25-27 at 7:30 p.m., and will also include a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 28. Reserve your seat online and bring your George Fox ID with you to show at the door. You may also purchase additional tickets online. Tickets are also available for pick-up at the box office in the Bruin Store (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

Interested in working for Commuter Life spring semester? Apply to be a commuter assistant

Commuter Life is hiring a commuter assistant who will focus on large-event programming for the spring 2019 semester. If you are interested in working to build authentic relationships among commuters, consider applying to be a commuter assistant. Commuter assistants will help plan programs, build relationships, and care for commuter students.

Enter debate competition for chance to win Amazon gift card

All are invited to participate in a debate competition known as the “Policy Debate” on campus on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Hoover lobby. The team check-in, opening ceremony and coaching session will take place between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The first debate round will commence at 1:45 p.m., and the final will finish at 8 p.m.

This event will focus on chosen topics that teams of four will debate on over the course of three preliminary rounds, plus a final round. Participants will be expected to attend the full event, including debates, meals and ceremonies. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served to all participants throughout the day.

No previous experience in a debate is required. Each individual person on the winning team will receive $125 Amazon gift cards. Smaller amounts will be given to other participants who place lower.

Auditions for ‘Jane Eyre’ set for tonight in Wood-Mar

University theatre auditions for the winter musical, Jane Eyre, are tonight (Monday)!

The general audition will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Call-backs will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. both tomorrow and Wednesday in the same location.

Prepare a fully memorized and rehearsed 90-second dramatic monologue and one minute of a Broadway song of your choice for the general audition (bring sheet music to the audition). Call-backs will feature cold readings, dance auditions and vocal work.

There is a cast of nine women, six men and six children (ages 10-17). Sign up for an audition time slot on the theatre call board in the Lemmons Center!

Come hear beauty of Bauman’s organ at upcoming concert Oct. 28

Traditional church music, including beloved hymns, will fill the university’s Bauman Auditorium for its annual Oregon Hymn Festival Concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28.

Highlighting the program will be noted organist Dan Miller, a featured organist for concerts at St. John the Divine Church in New York City, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the International Music Trade Show in Frankfurt, Germany. He will be at the Rodgers Digital Organ keyboards, an upgrade on the auditorium’s original 36-rank Balcom and Vaughn pipe organ system with 2,067 pipes that are the permanent backdrop for the auditorium’s stage.

General admission tickets are $5 and are available at georgefox.edu/concerts, through the university’s box office by calling 503-554-3844, and at the door. The event is being sponsored by the newly named Legacy League of George Fox, formerly the George Fox Auxiliary. Proceeds will go toward the Legacy League’s endowed scholarship fund for students.

The 18-part music department program will include six selected hymns that the audience will be encouraged to join in singing. The program includes several hymn stories featuring Brent Weaver, professor of music and music department chair at George Fox.

The program also will include a string sextet, a four-member keyboard ensemble and an eight-member brass ensemble, all featuring George Fox students.

The Wineskin is now accepting submissions! There is no theme for this semester – just send us your best work. We are looking for poems, stories, essays and artwork that encourages a new perspective of the world and intrigue us with their attention to patterns of sight, touch, thought and sound.

The Intercultural Resource Center is hosting the third annual Voices Conference in Bauman Auditorium and various Canyon Commons rooms. The conference will run from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This multicultural leadership conference is open to people from all backgrounds and cultures. Our vision is to create space for students, faculty, staff and community members to engage in meaningful conversations about being multicultural leaders in an increasingly diverse society.

Well-known leaders and speakers Leroy and Donna Barber and Alexia Salvatierra will be leading workshops and discussions regarding social justice, leadership and diversity. There will be elective chapel credit offered for students.

Community innovation project proposals for Voices Conference due Tuesday

We are so excited for the Voices Conference Oct. 26-27! This year, we are launching our community innovation project where conference attendees can submit short proposals for projects that address issues facing communities of color.

Submissions are due Tuesday, Oct. 23, and finalists will be notified on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Finalists will be expected to provide a five-minute (maximum) presentation on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Voices Conference about their proposal.

If you haven’t registered for the conference yet, you can register here. First place will receive $1,000, second place will receive $500, and third place will receive $250 to put toward the proposal.

Win bakery items from Newberg Bakery in food drive competition

The newly remodeled pantry in Roberts Center is ready to receive donations! Thanks to the team in Plant Services, we have a fresh coat of paint and plenty of shelves to fill. Starting tomorrow (Monday), until 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, we will be holding a food drive competition.

The office that brings in the most non-perishable food donations will receive bakery items from Newberg Bakery on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Each individual product will be counted and tallied to determine the winning department.

Important info for today’s football game

Our Family Weekend football game against Linfield is scheduled for today (Saturday)! Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. 

Be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot and the tennis court parking lot tonight (Friday). This space will be dedicated to football fan parking, activities and vendors on Saturday. No parking will be permitted in these lots.

Tailgate Activities
Join us in the Bauman parking lot at noon for fun Family Weekend tailgate activities!

Entrances to the Football Game
There will be two entrances into the game, and both are located in the Bauman parking lot directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center Closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts and locker rooms will be closed. There will be security officers who will ask you where you are headed; just let them know that you are going to work out.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 10 a.m.

Sideline Passes
No one will be granted field access without a sideline pass. Sideline passes are issued to those who are required to work and/or have official business during the game.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game free of charge. In addition, all George Fox alumni who check in at the Information Table will receive free admission to the game.

Additional tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. Or, visit the athletics ticket website.

We hope to see you at the game at 1:30 p.m. and the tailgates prior to that!
