Photography Club meets tonight

Join the Photography Club tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. in Lemmons 3 to learn about our upcoming events on and off campus.

We will be discussing the direction of the club this year, and we want your voice to be heard. We have all sorts of activities planned this semester, such as photo-editing in Lightroom and Photoshop, going on outings into both towns and the wilderness, learning how to set up a portfolio website, using film cameras, and fun weekly photography challenges to participate in.

Get your Sadie Hawkins Dance tickets now

Tickets for the Sadie Hawkins Dance are officially on sale!

Tickets for either the Sternwheeler or the Portland Spirit will be sold at the Bruin Store for $10 each between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. today (Thursday) and tomorrow. There is a limited amount sold for each boat, so make sure to purchase yours while supplies last.

Boarding for the dance begins at 9 p.m. Friday night at the Portland riverfront.

Support PT students’ Africa serve trip by entering raffle tomorrow

The university’s doctor of physical therapy program is hosting one last 50/50 raffle fundraiser to help raise funds for their Africa serve trip this summer.

Starting at 8 p.m., you can purchase tickets at their table in the Wheeler Sports Center’s lobby or from students walking through the stands during the first half of the men’s basketball game tomorrow (Friday).

When you purchase a raffle ticket, you will be entered into a drawing to win half of the money raised from this event. The winner will be announced at halftime.

Lecture ‘Why It Might Be OK to Make Bad Choices’ presented Monday

George Fox University’s Department of History, Sociology and Politics presents “Why It Might Be OK to Make Bad Choices.” All are invited to attend this lecture given by Bill Glod this Monday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Glod is the academic program officer at the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. He is responsible for managing a portfolio of more than 100 graduate students around the world who study the ideas of liberty.

Works of Beethoven, Chopin performed on Feb. 21

The works of Beethoven and Chopin will be performed on the George Fox stage when Bösendorfer Educational Artist Kenn Willson presents his “Encounters with Beethoven and Chopin” concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Bauman Auditorium.

Students and employees are entitled to one complimentary ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased for $12 (general admission), $8 (seniors and alumni), and $6 (students and children under 12). They may be purchased online at this link or by calling the school’s box office at 503-554-3844.

Willson will perform Beethoven’s Ecossaises Dances, German Dance #1, Sonata Op. 31 #3Movement 2 (Scherzo), Sonata Op. 27 #2 (“Moonlight”) and Ode to Joy. His Chopin repertoire includes Prelude Op. 28 #4, Prelude Op. 28 #6, and Ballade, Op. 47.

Join running training program

Join the Health and Human Performance department as we begin a running training program for students and employees.

The training program is designed to prepare students, faculty and staff for a 5K, 10K or half marathon of their choice. The program is open to all levels, with different route options provided each week depending on goal distance, level of experience, and/or time constraints for that given day. If you are unable to make a scheduled group run, please contact the HHP department to learn about other training plan options.

If you already have a race in mind, that’s great. If not, the group will plan to run the Rip City Race for the Roses together on April 28 in Portland. Click here for information on registering for that race.

The training group will meet on Mondays at 5 p.m., Wednesdays at 4 p.m., and Fridays at noon in front of the HHP offices. If different times are needed, please contact Mary Imboden at mimboden@georgefox.edu and she will try to coordinate with other runners who want to run at that time of day.

Micah will be here on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. in Edwards-Holman Science Center 102 to present his research on “Investigating Overall Energy Deposition in Collision- and Surface- Induced Dissociation of Protein Ions.”

The university community is invited to a lecture featuring Robert P. George at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, in Bauman Auditorium. George will be speaking on “Civic Virtues and the Constitution: The Founders’ Plan to Protect Liberty and Prevent Tyranny.”

Don’t miss this compelling lecture from one of the nation’s preeminent and influential conservative Christian thinkers, an award-winning teacher, and top scholar in ethics, law, politics and philosophy. George is the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. More information can be found here.

Enter the Bruin Community Pantry’s food drive competition

Between Monday, Feb. 25, and Friday, March 1, the Bruin Community Pantry will be holding a food drive competition. Each individual product donated will be tallied to determine the winning department.

Departments wishing to compete for the prize – a box of pastries from Newberg Bakery – should email Jere Witherspoon no later than Monday, Feb. 18. Please include the number of people participating in your department.

All items should be delivered to the food bank in Roberts Center 110 during the following times:

  • Monday and Thursday – Noon to 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Because the pantry has a plethora of certain items, only items found on this list will be counted. Please no macaroni and cheese, green beans, corn, or soup.
