Join the School of Social Work and fellow students, faculty and staff in wearing purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Day tomorrow (Thursday).

The goal of Purple Thursday is to raise awareness about domestic, spousal, teen dating, and intimate partner violence. Use your clothing to start conversations with others about domestic violence. Share photos online of you and fellow students, faculty and staff wearing purple, and use these hashtags: #DVAM #endDV #workAgainstViolence #PurpleThursday.

Today is final day to donate to animal shelter

Send some love to our furry friends at the Newberg Animal Shelter! Students in the Management 300 course are organizing a “Fetch” donation drive. Drop off donations today (Wednesday) in the big black bins located at two locations – one in Hoover and one in Roberts Center, just inside the front doors.

The “Fetch” list:

  • Foods: Premium dog food (adult and small bites), premium canned dog food, kitten & cat food (dry and canned), dog treats
  • Cleaners: Simple Green, window spray, dish soap, hand sanitizer, 409 spray, laundry detergent (any high-efficiency brand), Tide Free & Gentle (high-efficiency brand), bleach, sponges/scrub brushes, garbage bags (kitchen size), paper towels
  • Other: Flea medications, toys/Kongs, small fleece/soft blankets

Attend ‘The Love Imperative – a Defense’ lecture

Meghan Sullivan, an eminent philosopher and a professor from the University of Notre Dame, will give a presentation titled “The Love Imperative — A Defense” this Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. The campus community is invited to the event, hosted by the William Penn Honors Program.

Sullivan will unpack the Christian love imperative, defend it from some difficult objections, and indicate how it might be the basis for a mainstream philosophical approach to ethics.

Join the George Fox climbing community on Friday, Nov. 1, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. for Rocktoberfest, our fall bouldering competition. This is going to be a night of friendly competition and will include a raffle throughout the evening.

Apply to go on Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation trip

The Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation (SCORR) trip is an opportunity for students to engage in conversations surrounding diversity to prepare to attend the SCORR conference at Biola University in February.

The cohort of students selected to be on the SCORR trip will learn how to challenge perceptions, to engage in reconciliation, and will be equipped with tools to navigate difficult conversations surrounding diversity topics.

Donate rain gear to homeless in Portland

The Social Work Club is hosting a Rain Gear Drive for the homeless population in Portland. The drive runs through Tuesday, Oct. 29. Please bring all donations to the Social Work House (Meridian Street House) before Oct. 29.

We will be accepting donations of tarps, waterproof coats, towels, blankets, umbrellas, waterproof boots and shoes, hand warmers, and waterproof bags and/or backpacks.

All invited to ‘Engineering for Peace and Diplomacy’ lecture Thursday

Please join us this Thursday, Oct. 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons for the first of many talks within the George Fox University global impact seminar series.

The first presentation will be given by Bernard Amadei and is titled, “Engineering for Peace and Diplomacy,” in which Amadei will discuss the value proposition of using a systemic approach to healthy global development that centers on peace and social justice.   

Amadei comes to us from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is the founder of Engineers Without Borders (USA) and the former director of the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities. 

All are welcome to attend these talks that focus on solutions to the complex issues plaguing our global society. We hope these conversations will inspire and equip us for lives of service and societal impact.

Final performances of ‘A Gentleman’s Guide’ take Wood-Mar stage this week

This week marks the final shows of George Fox theatre’s fall musical comedy, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Come join us for a hilarious, knock ’em dead evening of murder and romance filled with high jinks and ghoulish surprises.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 24-27, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, followed by a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Students are entitled to a free ticket for the Thursday show. Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows. Bring your ID with you to the door to show that it matches your ticket.

Got stress, aches and pains, or do you just want to feel relaxed? Come by to get a massage by a doctor of physical therapy student and receive free stress management advice!

Our mission is to improve our community’s health by offering discounted massages to students ($15) and employees ($20). We are offering 30-minute massages on Monday, Oct. 28, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Roberts Center 204.

All proceeds will help fund our medical service trip to Uganda and Ghana. Donations are also welcome. Register here.
