Attend social work panel on addiction and recovery

The social work department will be hosting a panel on “Diversity Dialogue: Addiction and Recovery, Increasing Compassion and Removing the Stigma.” All are welcome to attend this Thursday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Have asthma? Participate in a research study

A student is performing a research study on asthma and its effects on the body with the goal of learning how to create exercise programs that best benefit those suffering from asthma.

‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder’ takes Wood-Mar stage next week

The George Fox theatre department opens its fall musical comedy A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder next week. Come join us for a hilarious, knock ’em dead evening of murder and romance filled with high jinks and ghoulish surprises.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Oct. 17 through 19 and Oct. 24 through 26 at 7:30 p.m., and will also include 2 p.m. matinee performances on Sunday, Oct. 20, and Sunday, Oct. 27. Open captioning will be available for select shows.

Students get their own tickets free both Thursdays, Oct. 17 and 24. Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows. Bring your ID with you to the door to show that it matches your ticket.

‘The Wineskin’ is accepting submissions

The Wineskin is now accepting submissions! The theme for this semester will be IDENTITY. However, there is no need to be bound by the theme – just send us your best poems, stories, essays and artwork.

The editors are open to a wide range of styles and subject matter, but we are particularly looking for work that pushes boundaries and surprises us with its artistic approach and perspective of the world.

Please submit all poetry, prose, photography, and artwork here. Our submission guidelines are as follows:

  • Poetry and prose manuscripts must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document in Times New Roman with a 12-point font. Title your pieces and remove your name from the document.
  • Limit all prose to 1,000 words and send no more than five poems per submission.
  • For artwork, files should be named with the title of your piece, followed by your name. Remove all watermarks from your work.

Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, will speak on balancing work, family and faith Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

VMware is a global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology and a recent article on VMware in Forbes described the company this way: “It’s not an exaggeration to say that VMware stands at the center of the IT universe. The company’s software touches nearly every element of modern IT architecture.” VMware employs more than 24,000 employees and revenue for fiscal 2018 was nearly $9 billion. Gelsinger, Intel’s first chief technology officer, drove the creation of key industry technologies, including USB and Wi-Fi.

Sign up for cooking class at Friendsview

The Bruin Community Pantry will sponsor a cooking class at Friendsview Manor on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students will work with residents to create a delicious and healthy meal and then share the meal they prepared together. No experience is necessary. Everything will be provided for you.

There is space in this class for only nine students, and participants will be selected on a first-come-first-served basis. We will keep a waiting list so we can send information to interested students about future classes.

Are you interested in studying abroad? The Center for Study Abroad is hosting a study abroad fair this Monday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Many of our off-campus programs will have representatives present to give information about different programs, countries, and requirements. We will also be passing out information about the Center for Study Abroad application requirements and due dates.

There will also be a prize drawing of $500 toward a study abroad program of your choice for those who attend and participate.
