The Daily Bruin

Over the past month, we have had over 30 commuters who have quarantined for being ill or being close to someone who is ill. Many self-identified and chose to care for our community.

Though there are similarities, the support for those who live off campus looks a little different than for residential students. I track with them regularly, SpIL reaches out to them, commuter assistants have shuttled groceries, and peers rally around them. There is a diverse team that seeks to provide care.

Under faculty supervision, we also had a dozen nursing students reach out daily as care managers. They have provided daily interaction, seeking to track well-being, provide an empathetic resource, and be an advocate for these students. As one who manages all of these concerns, I deeply value their role. I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank them for their investment and care. Well done and thank you!

I hope this is a small glimpse into how we are seeking to care for this segment of our community.

For the next few weeks, all on campus are welcome to visit a free art exhibition featuring the artwork of Adam Long and Jillian Sokso, professors of art and design at George Fox. The exhibit, “Urgency,” remains up through Oct. 21 in the Minthorne Gallery.

This exhibition features photographs from Long, and serigraph, relief, and chine colle prints from Sokso. Long’s and Sokso’s work discusses the urgency of climate change and America’s failing society. 

The gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Sarah Cuevas, exhibitions and collections assistant, at scuevas15@georgefox.edu.

The ’80s Dance is coming to you tonight (Friday) from 7 to 10 p.m.!

Our DJ on wheels will be traveling to eight locations on campus for 20 minutes per stop to host a distanced dance party with classic ’80s music, giveaways, and a traveling photo booth!

The East Lewis parking lot will be unavailable for parking on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The parking lot will be used as a Virginia Garcia Memorial Community Testing site. If you typically park in this location (Lot G on the parking map), please plan to park elsewhere on Oct. 6.

Parking enforcement will allow graduate students and Resident East students to park in any other lot that day without being ticketed.

The first presidential debate is history. Did it make you more or less worried about the effects of polarization in our country? 

If political polarization concerns you, you can do something about it by connecting with the 2020 George Fox Civility Project.

The opening session of the 2020 George Fox Civility Project is this Monday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., in Bauman Auditorium (and Zoom).

It will be starting with a talk by Professor of Politics Emeritus Ron Mock on what civility is, its grounding for Christians in basic elements of our faith, and its roots for political leaders in their fundamental duty to be stewards of our political culture.

Those who attend will have a chance to evaluate excerpts from political debates for their civility. Feedback collected from attenders will help in creating a political civility inventory that citizens can use to hold candidates and political leaders to account for whether their communications and actions strengthen or destroy our political culture.  

You can attend in person at Bauman Auditorium or via Zoom. Attendance in person will be limited. Those who arrive after the room reaches its 100-person COVID capacity will be asked to attend via Zoom. Zoom attendees can access the session at the above link.

A group of senior nursing students are doing their Population Health project on how COVID-19 has affected the rate of anxiety and depression within college students.

The Latinx Heritage Club is excited to announce its first event of the year, Bienvenidos!
