He will present “Technology in Exercise Science Research” and also talk about different graduate programs in the field of exercise science.

Starting today (Thursday), all on campus are welcome to visit a free art exhibition featuring the artwork of Adam Long and Jillian Sokso, professors of art and design at George Fox University.  The exhibit, “Urgency,” remains up through Oct. 21 in the Minthorne Gallery.

This exhibition features photographs from Long, and serigraph, relief, and chine colle prints from Sokso. Long’s and Sokso’s work discusses the urgency of climate change and America’s failing society.

The Latinx Heritage Club is excited to announce its first event of the year, Bienvenidos!

This year, the ’80s Dance is coming to you this Friday, Oct. 2, from 7 to 10 p.m.!

Our DJ on wheels will be traveling to eight locations on campus for 20 minutes per stop to host a distanced dance party with classic ’80s music, giveaways, and a traveling photo booth!

Last week we talked about the importance of taking a flu shot this year. Our Wellness Wednesday message for today is “Don’t waste fall by being sick. get a flu shot! It’s super quick.”

Remember it takes around two weeks for the body to build immunity in order to provide protection, so plan it now.

Here are your quick and easy options to get a flu shot this year:

  • Confirm the type of vaccine you need and put your ZIP code in, and you will get an instant list of all options in your area.

• For Kaiser flu shots
  • Kaiser drive-through and walk-up flu shot clinics are available from Oct. 3 to Oct. 31, with no appointment necessary.
  • Search by your city or ZIP code here.

Below are some important items to remember before you get a flu shot:

• Does the flu shot protect against COVID-19?
  • No. The flu shot doesn’t protect against COVID-19. However, the flu vaccine can help reduce your risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death.
  • If fewer people get the flu, care teams can focus their time and resources on providing COVID-19 patients with the care they need. During 2018-19 flu vaccination prevented an estimated 58,000 flu-related hospitalizations.
• Should a flu vaccine be given to someone with suspected of confirmed COVID-19?
  • No. If you tested positive for COVID-19, or believe you might have it, it’s best to wait before getting a flu shot. This will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to anyone in the flu shot location, including other patients and healthcare teams.

Do you wish there was something you could do to help overcome America’s increasing  polarization before it tears our country apart?

You can! Connect with the 2020 George Fox Civility Project. The 2020 GFCP has three elements: two events and a project.

• The first event will be an introductory session on Monday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium (limit: 100 occupants) or Zoom. Participants will learn a new way of thinking about how political leadership should act, and help create a political civility inventory for assessing whether politicians and others strengthen our political culture or destroy it when they communicate about their different views.
• The second is a project: a field test of the political civility inventory while you watch the vice presidential debate on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and/or the presidential debate on Thursday, Oct. 15.
• The closing event on Monday, Oct. 19, will feature George Fox professors Mark Hall and Phil Smith in a (hopefully civil!) debate about who should get our vote for president.

You do not have to participate in all three elements. You can attend either event, or both. If you want to participate in the project, you should attend the first event.

Don’t miss this chance to get in on the ground floor of an important university initiative, and help your community and our nation deal with controversial issues more constructively!

Hey everyone! The Ping Pong Club is super excited to be partnering with Hadlock and Paddle Palace to host the inaugural Paddle Palace George Fox Intramural Ping Pong Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Hadlock.

Registration will open on IMLeagues on Monday, Oct. 19, and will close Friday, Oct. 23. We will have prizes available, including a $25 Nike gift card, balls, and paddles.

General auditions for the play Silent Sky will be held Monday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Actors should prepare a 90-second contemporary monologue (either dramatic or comic). Monologues should be fully memorized and rehearsed and should take into consideration the fact that you are auditioning and performing on Zoom.

If you are a theatre major, minor, and/or scholarship student, your work needs to be fully memorized and prepared. All others, please feel free to read from a script if needed, but having it memorized and prepared is always best.

Many have been asking about the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). The society is national and the campus chapter is sponsored by George Fox (it is legitimate!).

The NSLS is the nation’s largest leadership honor society. Students are selected by their university for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. Candidacy is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction.

In addition to honorable distinction, the NSLS provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation at their campus or online. Upon completion of the program, members receive their leadership certificate and take their place among the student leaders at their campus and across the country.

The NSLS exists to recognize, cultivate, and honor leaders, all while making lasting, positive change in the world. The society strives to help members discover and achieve their goals, providing real-world experience that assists members to have opportunities to achieve success in their future.
