Plan to attend Spring Faculty Lecture and scholars symposium

All are invited to the Spring 2020 Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Our featured speaker, and recipient of the 2018-19 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship, is Leah Payne, assistant professor of theology. 

Payne is a historian of Christianity in America, and her analysis of religion, politics and popular culture has appeared in The Washington Post and Christianity Today. Join us as Payne explores “the contemporary Christian” and how evangelicals in the United States were shaped by the entertainment business of the late 20th century.

Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter Student Scholars and Steinfeldt Peace Scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. George Fox students will present their research projects in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be served.

Acoustic quirks abound as a guitar’s sound is deconstructed and rebuilt. The presentation will be led by Jay Dickinson, who holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and has more than 25 years’ experience in corporate physics and engineering. Multiple examples of his work will be on display.

See documentary on Latino image in Hollywood

All are invited to see award-winning Hollywood producer Nancy de los Santos-Reza present and discuss her new HBO documentary, The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latino Image in Hollywood, at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) in Hoover 105.

De los Santos-Reza’s film provides an overview of how Latinos have been portrayed in Hollywood in each decade of the twentieth century. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer time with de los Santos-Reza.

Join ‘Gym to Crag’ climbing class

Are you interested in taking your climbing to the next level by venturing outside? This is the class for you! We will cover a variety of topics, including knots, anchor building, and risks unique to outdoor climbing.

There are three class sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 25, March 3 and March 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. The course will conclude with an outdoor excursion on Saturday, March 14.

The course fee is $15 and needs to be paid prior to the first class session. Participants should be experienced climbers and have completed the Hadlock Student Center belay assessment or equivalent. Sign up at imleagues.com.
