Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Laser Cutters

Thursday, November 17th, 2022

Maybe we haven’t been able to convince you to come to the Maker Hub and make something new, but how about customizing an object you already have?

The Maker Hub’s Trotec Speedy 300 and 400 laser cutters can be used to engrave and cut materials based on specified images and shapes. This is useful for making enclosures out of acrylic, engraving designs into many materials, creating trophies, and cutting any two-dimensional shape out of a variety of materials. It also has a rotary attachment which enables cylindrical objects such as drinking glasses and hydro flasks to be engraved with detailed designs.

The Speedy 400 uses the same software and general setup as the Speedy 300, however it has a larger bed. Check out this video to see how it works. For more information, check out the Maker Hub’s Wiki page for the laser cutters.

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers!). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.
