Interested in practicing your dance moves and learning what to do on the dance floor, unscripted? Miles Harrop will be teaching a freestyle dance workshop tomorrow (Saturday) from 1 to 4 p.m. in Hadlock!

During this workshop, participants will learn specific styles like animation, along with the basic principles of freestyle dance. No previous experience is necessary to participate.

Attend psychology chapel this Tuesday in Hoover 103

Emerging Leaders PDX is dedicated to improving racial and cultural diversity at the leadership level in Portland-area companies. The Emerging Leaders Internship (ELI) program matches students of color with paid summer internships at top companies throughout the Portland metro area.

Their mission is to empower diverse talent to excel as professionals through opportunity and a supportive community. Since 2016, they have placed participants into 500-plus internships, with many successfully transitioning into full-time employment.

Here’s some ELI internship basics:

  • All ELI internships are paid ($18+/hour)
  • Full time at 30 to 40 hours per week for 10 to 12 weeks
  • Summer internships typically running from June to August
  • Interns work on meaningful projects and receive mentorship

ELI partners with organizations across all industries to place interns into positions
within the following job groupings:

Sign up for a waterfall or sunrise hike this weekend

University Recreation is offering two ways to enjoy this wonderful fall weather this weekend!

Join us on Saturday, Nov. 19, for a fun hike to over six different waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. Or wake up early with us on Sunday, Nov. 20, for a sunrise hike up to Angel’s Rest that includes a devotional and spiritual life credit. We provide all of the transportation, headlamps, food, and leadership for each trip.

Fund OREC scholarships by buying longboards

One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of these boards will go toward a student fund that provides financial assistance for students who need help to attend outdoor recreation trips and activities.

Join dialogue about understanding addiction tomorrow

Please join the social work department as we hear from several speakers from a variety of professional disciplines from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. They will join us on campus from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) for a special event, “Diversity Dialogue: An Interdisciplinary Understanding of Addiction,” in Canyon Commons.

Hazelden is an inpatient drug rehab center in Newberg that specializes in an individualized approach to treatment, which includes detox, inpatient and outpatient rehab options, animal-assisted programming, post-treatment groups and recovery support, and family education.

We will be hearing from the medical director, the program manager, the nurse manager, the outreach manager, a licensed clinical social worker (and clinical director), and wellness specialist. It will take an multi-disciplinary look at understanding addiction and will be available on livestream here.

Lottery registration open for UREC spring break trips

The lottery is now open for University Recreation’s outdoor-adventure spring break trips! Consider joining either or both of the lotteries for the possibility to be eligible for a spring break trip.

This year, we have one trip to Southern California, and another to Utah and Colorado. No prior outdoor recreation experience is necessary in order to attend one of these trips. Trips are open to any current undergraduate or graduate students.

Soccer camp for kids raises money for Special Olympics

Hello! We are holding a soccer camp to raise money for the Special Olympics. It will be for ages 4-13 and take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, at the Austin Sports Complex.

There is a $10 fee to register, and no experience needed. All money received will be donated. If you’re unable to participate but still want to donate, please contact Ashley Foster at afoster20@georgefox.edu or 916-895-1310.

  • Three hours of tennis per day; drills, games, instruction and more!

We will be meeting up in Klages 231 at 3 p.m. on Friday. Bring your favorite mug, as we’ll be celebrating with hot chocolate afterwards! All supplies will be provided.

Join the university’s Christmas celebration on Dec. 1

Are you in the holiday spirit? Then you won’t want to miss the university’s Christmas celebration event on the Newberg campus on Thursday, Dec. 1!

You are invited to gather for cookies, coffee and cider in the Stevens Center atrium at 4 p.m. That will be followed by a tree-lighting ceremony, carols, and a devotional in the same location at 4:30 p.m.

Then, from 5 to 8 p.m., we’ll have carriage rides in the quad, a Christmas photo booth, a roaming Santa, choir and ensemble caroling, a petting zoo, and ornament decorating.

As for treats, we’ll be serving gourmet s’mores and hot cocoa (1927 S’mores Company), seasonal popcorn (Miss Hannah’s Popcorn) and apple cider, coffee, and cookies (compliments of Bon Appetit).

So, dress up in your favorite Christmas costume or sweater (there will be an incentive to do so) and join us!

Multi-factor authentication now required for students

As of today (Monday), all students will be required to use multi-factor authentication to sign in to university resources through single sign-on (email, Canvas, MyGeorgeFox, Zoom, etc.) at login.georgefox.edu.

All students are to opt-in to multi-factor authentication by following these instructions. We encourage everyone to set up more than one option. This will ensure that you have more than one way to sign in.
