Updated Fitness Center Information

Sunday, August 5th, 2018

We trust you are excited about the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27 (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice most of the space has been cleared in anticipation of remodeling it for athletics’ use since the HSC will be opening soon. Due to this upcoming remodeling of the Wheeler fitness center space, some equipment has been moved into the adjacent dance studio space (Wheeler 211) for general student and employee use until the HSC opens. The squat racks are also still available for use and are in their original spot.

There are more limited hours for this interim space in Wheeler, as it will now be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Saturday and Sunday). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this transitional period and trust that the new space in the HSC will make it worth the wait!

Questions? Contact Rob Simpson (simpsonr@georgefox.edu) regarding the HSC or Adam Puckett (apuckett@georgefox.edu) regarding the Wheeler Sports Center space.

University launches Bruin Community Pantry this fall

Thursday, August 2nd, 2018

The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the start of Bruin Community Pantry, an initiative seeking to address the real problem of hunger (“food insecurity”) on campus. It’s our goal to help meet the needs of community members who, for one reason or another, do not have access to enough healthy food.

Four different components of Bruin Community Pantry include:

Food Pantry
All George Fox community members have access to the pantry, located in the Roberts Center (Room 110). Community food drives will be held to provide non-perishable items for the pantry, and athletic teams will facilitate food drives during home games.

Contact student life for a list of items non-perishable food and household items needed for the pantry. Donations are now being accepted in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center.

Hospitality
Partnerships with local businesses for “gifts in kind” have been established with Bon Appetit, Newberg’s Grocery Outlet and Ray’s Produce. A variety of pre-packaged foods are available for students, located at hospitality tables in the student life office, spiritual life office, and the Intercultural Resource Center (Moore House). The tables are open during office hours, which are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Duke Athletic Center will host a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar that is available to all George Fox students.

Leftovers
The student life office will arrange for quality leftover food to be stored in a refrigerator in our office. All food donated will be adequately contained and dated. Food not picked up in the appropriate amount of time will be disposed of.

Students participating in this program can sign up by contacting our office. A waiver is required for anyone participating in the Leftovers program.

Outreach
Partnering with existing local outreach initiatives facilitated by spiritual life, students who want to support their efforts will be connected to their programs.

We live in a society with easy access to processed food. When you eat whole foods, you’re getting food in its natural state. This aspect of our outreach will endeavor to provide cooking classes in various living areas on campus using recipes from “Eat well on $4 a day, Good and Cheap.”

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon in the student life office (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2312).

Important Fitness Center Information

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

Only weeks remain before the opening of the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27, so that student staff can be adequately trained on the new equipment and protocols (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the current fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice that much of the older equipment has been moved out. Sometime in August, the large portion of the space will be remodeled for athletics’ use in light of the addition of women and men’s swimming and the continued growth in the number of student-athletes (currently 20 percent of our undergraduate student population). The smaller portion of the current facility (the free weight area) will be remodeled into a classroom during the fall semester.

Please note that because of remodeling and construction of new space, there will likely be a two- to three-week time frame in August when there will be no fitness center available for general campus use. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience for those who are regularly using this space and trust that the new space in the Hadlock Student Center will make it worth the wait!

Be aware of statewide transit tax

Tuesday, July 17th, 2018

As of July 1, 2018, you’ll see a new item on your paystub for Oregon’s statewide transit tax. The tax is one-tenth of one percent (.001) — or $1 per $1,000. Your employer will be automatically withholding the tax – just like the personal income tax – so you don’t have to do or change anything. Unlike the personal income tax, there’s no withholding exemption for this tax.

Revenue from the statewide transit tax will go to expanding public transportation throughout Oregon. For more information on how the tax revenues will be used, check out “HB 2017 Funding Package” under “Projects & News” on the Oregon Department of Transportation’s website.

To learn more about the tax itself, visit the Department of Revenue online at oregon.gov/dor.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Kasondra Silva at ksilva@georgefox.edu.
