If you travel through Portland regularly to get to work at the Newberg campus or Portland Center, or take classes at either campus, you need to be aware of major construction closures occurring during July and August on the I-5 and I-84 interchanges by the Moda Center.
Please go to this website for all of the specifics, and plan now for alternate routes, as back-ups are expected to be lengthy during ramp and lane closures.
Tripcheck.com is another good source, as it has current webcams all over the state as well as a listing of potential closures or delays on roads you might be traveling for summer vacations.

The university community is invited to a professional reading of the Big Bridge Theatre Consortium’s play The Shakers of Mount Lebanon Will Hold a Peace Conference this Month, written by Arlene Hutton, at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, June 23, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. There is no charge to attend, but tickets need to be reserved at georgefox.edu/bigbridge.

From now until late this month, the sidewalk and lawn area on the south side of the Roberts Center near the physical therapy entrance and the pathway between Canyon Commons and the Hadlock Student Center will be closed and blocked off for construction work. There may be a pathway available close to the Roberts Center, but it will be through the bushes and planter bed (not hard surface).
Pedestrian traffic from Lewis Apartments and Sherman Street east of the Hadlock Student Center to Canyon Commons and the Crisman Crossing pedestrian bridge will need to go the long way around Roberts Center to Brandt Hall and the north side of Canyon Commons (access through North Street).
The construction of this area is expected to be finished by Monday, June 25. Thank you for your patience as we complete updating this area!

With high temperatures being forecast for next week, here are a few safety tips to stay cool …
- Purchase a fan now before local store supplies run out.
- Purchase and cut wooden dowels two to four inches shorter than your window track length to safely keep windows open for ventilation at night, and to prevent unwanted entry.
- Keep curtains closed and windows shut during the daytime and only open up when temperatures have dropped to 70 degrees or below. Use a box window fan to blow in cooler air right before going to sleep.
- Hydrate!
- Don’t forget the sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Do not prop open entry doors in a dorm or apartment, as you put the entire residence at risk of unwanted entry.
- If working outdoors, freeze several damp towels and bring them to your work site in a cooler and place periodically around your neck to cool down your body.
- Seek medical treatment immediately if signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke are present. (Don’t know what they are? Take the First Aid/AED/CPR classes next Monday and Tuesday to learn how to recognize and treat these serious conditions. Sign-ups are on the Campus Public Safety website).

Campus Public Safety (formerly Security Services) desires that there be at least one or more staff or students trained in First Aid/CPR/AED in each building, and summer is a great time to take this training!
This class will be offered on the Newberg campus on Monday and Tuesday, June 18-19, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day in the Hoover Academic Building. Sign-ups can be done here, more information is available and payment can be made on the Campus Public Safety website, and you can pick up your book before class in the Campus Public Safety office after registering and paying.
Class is limited to just eight people, so sign up soon! Non-George Fox people can also register, so pass the word along if you know of people who are interested or need to re-certify.
Contact Mark Stone (mstone@georgefox.edu) with any questions.
