Apply to become an outdoor recreation trip leader

University Recreation is seeking applicants to become outdoor recreation trip leader apprentices. This is a volunteer trip leader position for spring 2022 that allows students to learn and be mentored before starting as a paid trip leader for fall 2022. No prior outdoor leadership experience is necessary.

Students will learn significant leadership and outdoor recreation skills while helping facilitate activities like snowshoeing, camping, backpacking, paddle boarding, kayaking, biking and hiking. Please share this opportunity with any students whom you think might be interested!

University Recreation is hosting BIPOC climb nights and women’s climb nights at the Hadlock Student Center throughout the fall semester. The next BIPOC climb night is on Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 7 to 10 p.m.

The BIPOC climb nights are for any members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community and allies! Join us for climbing, community, conversation, and fun. Everyone is invited!

Wear your Halloween costume for group fitness classes next week (Oct. 25-29)! We will be celebrating spooky-season together through dance, cardio, strength training and more!

Our festivities will culminate with a Glow Zumba event on Thursday at 7 p.m. Wear white or neon to glow under the blacklight; glow sticks will be provided.

Climbing wall closed until Monday morning; ‘Rocktoberfest’ set for Oct. 29

The Hadlock Student Center climbing wall will be closed until 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25.

The closure is required so University Recreation staff can prepare for the upcoming “Rocktoberfest” climbing competition set for Friday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 10 p.m. If you’re interested in learning more about this competition and/or competing, please go here.

The competition is not exclusive to elite athletes or advanced climbers; it’s for everyone! In fact, the vast majority of climbers who register have been climbing for fewer than two years. It’s a fun community event that we have once a semester to connect people and celebrate the joy of climbing.

Submit your ideas to the Critical Hit Creativity Contest!

Are you creative? Do you have ideas for a Dungeons & Dragons campaign or character you haven’t used yet? Then submit them to the Critical Hit Creativity Contest!

There are two ways to win:

  • Campaign Setting: From grand maps to plot lines, we want to see your creative ideas for a game world in Dungeons and Dragons!
  • Characters: We want to see your cool ideas for characters! Whether it be a dashing swashbuckler tiefling to a bookish elven scholar, send in your character sheet, drawing, or other aspects that highlights your ideas!

The winners will receive their choice of gunmetal dice from Easy Roller Dice! Submit your ideas by Sunday, Oct. 31!

Check out Fall Fest before Saturday’s football game

Come on out to Saturday’s home football game to get in the spooky spirit! Activities at the game will include a pre-game “trunk-or-treat” tailgate (trick-or-treating car to car), a crowd-wide costume contest, a spooky photo booth, and the opportunity to participate in the halftime field goal contest.

Wear your best costume and come get some candy and cheer on our Bruins! Kickoff is at 1 p.m., but be sure to come early to participate in our parking lot activities!

Announcement about Family Weekend parking

Due to the upcoming Family Weekend events and festivities, we are asking that you do not leave your vehicles parked in the Bauman/Duke parking lot after Friday’s concert. The lot will be closed Friday night and any cars found in the first two rows abandoned Saturday morning will be towed if we can not reach the owner.

Please help us to help you and park in other lots if you are leaving for trips, retreats, or other activities this weekend.

Join whitewater rafting trip this weekend for SpiL credit

Looking for an adventure this weekend? Join University Recreation and the Office of Spiritual Life on Saturday, Oct. 23, for a whitewater rafting trip on the North Santiam River! No prior rafting experience is necessary. This is an ideal river for beginner whitewater rafters and will provide a great introduction to rafting with highly trained guides.

We will be rafting with Lifelines, the outdoor ministry of CRU. As part of our time, we will engage in some activities designed to help us share experiences and reflect with one another. The rest of the time, we will be rafting and having loads of fun on the water!

Spread awareness of domestic violence on Purple Thursday

October is domestic violence awareness month, and Purple Thursday is observed during the third full week of the month. We invite everyone to wear purple tomorrow (Thursday) and share photos of yourself using the national hashtag #PurpleThursday to spread awareness and show your support for survivors of domestic violence across the country.

‘Much Ado About Nothing’ opens this week in Wood-Mar Auditorium

After 20 months of creating theatre in digital and outdoor venues, the university’s theatre program is returning to Wood-Mar Auditorium for our fall production of Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. The show runs Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 28-30, at 7:30 p.m., and concludes with a Sunday matinee on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m.

COVID Precautions

All patrons must be masked. Our ticketing system will automatically place one empty seat on either side of your ticket purchase to create extra space between you and the patrons next to you. We encourage all patrons to be vaccinated to help protect our actors and fellow audience members from COVID-19.

Livestream Option

If you are uncomfortable attending the production in person due to the pandemic – or can’t make the trip for any reason – please feel free to purchase our livestream options available on either Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m., or Sunday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m.

Special Ticket Options for Students, Faculty and Staff

Students may acquire free tickets for Thursday night performances. George Fox faculty and staff are entitled to one free ticket for the run of the show. Fall Faculty Lecture is tonight!

Dawn Ford and the Faculty Development Committee invite you to attend the Fall Faculty Lecture, presented by Associate Professor of Nursing Lorretta Krautscheid, tonight (Tuesday) from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Krautscheid, chair of the College of Nursing and recipient of the 2020-21 Faculty Achievement Award for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship, will present “Moral Distress: What Do We Know and What Can Be Done?”

She will present research on the nursing attrition dilemma and discuss her education recommendations to promote resilience-protective factors.

Join us for our “Spooky Soiree” in the Maker Hub from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30! It will be a fun evening of activities, including pumpkin laser cutting, pumpkin painting, festival games, and a photo booth!

Come dressed in your best costume to compete in a costume competition with a university-renowned panel of judges that you all know and love. Costume contest judging is from 8 to 9 p.m., followed by a dance party.

Swing by blood drive this Friday

Come help save three lives and stop by the blood drive at Abby’s pizza (1913 Portland Road, in Newberg) this Friday, Oct. 22!
