The third faculty “Coffee & Conversation†of the fall, titled “Collaboration: Shifting to Hybrid Teaching,†is set from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. today (Wednesday), in Hoover 104. Melanie Springer Mock and Gary Tandy will share their experiences in leading the discussion.
This “Coffee & Conversation” session features the collaborative approach Melanie and Gary are using with their Writing 110 students, including implementing a hybrid instructional approach. Students spend 75 minutes with their instructors each week, and then complete the rest of their work online, keeping public blogs, commenting on their peers’ work, reading essays by professional writers, and managing their documents through Google Drive.

The fourth annual MLK Day of Service will take place Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. The day will begin at 9 a.m. in Portland with a rally to provide an opportunity to reflect, celebrate and remember Dr. King. Following the rally, students will serve in the community until 2 p.m.
This service day is a multi-institutional collaboration among colleges and universities and the convening organization Oregon Campus Compact. This event is one of the largest mobilizations of college students in the country on MLK Day.
We will be meeting earlier on Monday morning to bus over as a group. Follow this link to register for the day!

Questions about osteopathic medicine? Luke Rauch (lrauch@western.edu), a representative of COMP-Northwest, will be on the Newberg campus Thursday, Nov. 29, to answer questions about medical school admissions, curriculum and more.
COMP-Northwest is an osteopathic medical school located in Lebanon, Ore., and is part of Western University of Health Sciences, located in California. Luke will hold a presentation at 2:45 p.m. in EHS 217 and will be available for drop-in at a table on the second floor of EHS between 12:30 and 2:20 p.m.

An all-employee meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, Nov. 29, at 3:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.
For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available at a stream site that you can access from MyGFU. Simply log into MyGFU and click the “Community Meeting Link†located under “Staff Resources/Faculty Resources.†It is the bottom link in that section. The link will take you to all the information relating to community meetings and include a live-stream link (the password changes each meeting) and a chat room link.

Applications for the faculty Professional Learning Community “Teaching for Student Learning: Effective Strategies for the University Classroom†will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 10.
The PLC, originally scheduled for this fall, was moved to spring semester. Several faculty are already enrolled, but there is plenty of room for more! The PLC is designed to enhance teaching, increase student learning, and deepen reflective practice.
The facilitator is Gary Sehorn, assistant professor of education. Sessions will be held in Newberg from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. on the following Wednesdays: Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 20, March 6, March 20, April 10 and April 24. Each participant will receive an honorarium of $325 and a copy of the book How Learning Works.
