ARC still taking appointments as finals week approaches

The end is near! If you still want (or need) to make an appointment with the Academic Resource Center for help on semester-ending projects, make sure you do so soon. Space for 25- or 50-minute consultations are available from now until finals week, though spaces are filling up.

The ARC is staffed by trained consultants who can provide assistance with writing projects, research essays, and studying for finals. If you want an appointment, call extension 2327, e-mail the_arc@georgefox.edu, or go to georgefox.edu/arc. Click on “Scheduling an Appointment” for details about arranging an appointment with a peer consultant.

Student life is coordinating university employees who are interested in hosting a student at their family’s Thanksgiving dinner. We will be compiling a list of interested people.

If you would like to put your name on this list, please e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu) with the following information by Wednesday, Nov. 14 (date extended):

  • Your name
  • Contact information (e-mail and phone)
  • Number of students you would like to host

If we receive any requests from students, we will do our best to match them with interested hosts. You will be notified by e-mail if a student has been matched with your request. Then you can contact the student directly to make arrangements.

Cultural Fair is this afternoon in Bruin Den

Today (Tuesday) is the Cultural Fair from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Bruin Den. Come join us! The Cultural Fair will feature students from Asia, Europe, Africa and other parts of America sharing something about their own culture.

You do not need to go to other countries or places to experience a different culture – just come to the Cultural Fair. You will have a chance to enjoy wonderful displays, learn something new, and of course experience delicious food from all over the world!

Chinese class meets tonight in International House

All are again welcome to a Chinese language class tonight (Tuesday) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the International House/Cultural Center. As usual, the first half an hour will be reviewing time, and the rest of the time will be spent learning something new.

‘Colored White’ panel discussion set for Thursday

Have you ever wondered about the process of white identity formation, or considered how your own race affects your worldview? Come to “Colored White,” a panel discussion as part of Cultural Celebration Week at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Hoover 105.

The event will feature Melanie Hulbert, Jonathan Morell, Drew Miller, Jodi Van Gorkom and Bailie Bowey. Audience members will be able to listen to panelists’ stories and ask questions.

If someone comes to mind, please consider submitting a nomination via email to Peggy Kilburg (pkilburg@georgefox.edu) by Tuesday, Nov. 20, with a summary of this person’s recent contributions and any other information that makes this person deserving of this award.

The President’s Executive Leadership Team will select a recipient from among the nominees, and as is our custom, the winner will be honored with a citation and a $100 gift card to The Allison at our community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Sock drive for the homeless begins today

We are hosting a sock drive for the homeless. Donate your new or recently washed used socks in a blue trash bin in the Bruin Den between Nov. 12 and Dec. 3.

Consider donating a pair or two of your used or no-longer-in-style socks to those individuals who have fallen on hard times and find themselves homeless in this cold weather.

Interested in osteopathic medicine? Come to Nov. 29 presentation

Questions about osteopathic medicine? Luke Rauch (lrauch@western.edu), a representative of COMP-Northwest, will be on the Newberg campus Thursday, Nov. 29, to answer questions about medical school admissions, curriculum and more.

COMP-Northwest is an osteopathic medical school located in Lebanon, Ore., and is part of Western University of Health Sciences, located in California. Luke will hold a presentation at 2:45 p.m. in EHS 217 and will be available for drop-in at a table on the second floor of EHS between 12:30 p.m. and 2:20 p.m.

Please remind graduating seniors that Fall Exodus Fair is today

Newberg employees: Please remind your fall graduating students that the Fall Exodus Fair is today (Thursday)!

Here are the details:

The Exodus Fair will take place in the Stevens Center Atrium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seniors can pick up their cap and gown, order graduation announcements, enjoy some free food, and much more!

Note: For those students graduating in May 2013, their Exodus Fair will be in March 2013.

Credit card reconciliation training offered Nov. 13-14

Financial affairs will offer credit card reconciliation training on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. or Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Library Instruction Room (in basement of MLRC, Room B13). If you have a new university credit card, this is your chance to learn how the new process for monthly reconciliation will be conducted.

Bring your receipts, as you will have the ability to use your real data while training. At the end of the training you will be well on your way (if not finished) with reconciling your first month’s transactions.

Space is limited to 25 people a session, so please e-mail Andy Dunn (adunn@georgefox.edu) with the date and time you would like to attend. If you have questions, please e-mail or call Andy at ext. 2162.

All are invited to join Jeff VandenHoek, director of business relations in the George Fox School of Business, as he and others spotlight the School of Business’ current internship program successes and plans for the development of future internship opportunities.
