The final faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the spring is titled “Shifting to Online Teaching: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” and will be held today (Monday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 104.

Online teaching is an increasingly common format, but few professors feel fully at home in this environment. What are the opportunities and challenges? This “Coffee & Conversation” will feature the experiences of Melanie Hulbert, Brent Weaver, John Knox, Debora Herb-Sepich and Colleen Huffman. All of them are teaching summer online courses.

• Come if you want to get a better understanding of online teaching.
• Come if you are interested in what’s involved in shifting to online teaching.
• Come if you have your own experiences with online teaching to share.
• Come if you just want to have some free coffee and “world-famous” scones made by Brenda Burg and listen to the discussion!

Know of students who are looking to be leaders on campus and serve the Lord? ASC’s Outreach Ministries is now hiring for next school year! We need student leaders to coordinate our homeless ministries, mentoring opportunities, community service, winter and spring Serve Trips, and missions opportunities for the student body.

Justin Wiens will present his research in a chemistry seminar titled, “General Chemistry Demos with Fancy Equipment: Sodium Reactivity at the Vacuum-Liquid Interface.” The lecture is on Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. in EHS 102.

If you’re interested in joining the university’s community garden this summer, or just want to take a break from your studies for a couple hours to pull some weeds, join us on Wednesday, April 10, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and all future Wednesdays through the summer.

Out with the old and in with the new! The university has a new insurance company. This means that if you are planning on driving a vehicle for university business (either a university vehicle or a rental vehicle), you must complete the new online certification process. If your name is not listed here and you are interested in being an approved driver, please visit this link for certification.

The old approved driver’s list has expired as of March 15, 2013 (the list that awarded the “VAN” stickers). Please contact Plant Services at ext. 2016 if you have any questions.

Four $1,000 CW Perry Servant Leadership Awards will be given to four seniors graduating in May 2013. Each award recipient will be required to set aside $250 of this gift to the charitable organization of his or her choice. The remaining $750 will be distributed to the award recipient in the form of a cash award.

The aim of this award is to promote the ideals of servant leadership in the George Fox University community. Do you know of a deserving undergraduate senior who demonstrates outstanding services as a servant leader on campus or in the community? More info is available here.

Make plans now to attend the School of Business’ Spring Speaker Series event, featuring Fortune 500 and celebrity brand manager Pinky Gonzales, on Friday, April 19, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Portland Center. There is no charge to attend.

Gonzales will outline the art and science of personal branding with social media and more. Attendees will learn how to land their next job, attract new business, and communicate more professionally with contacts and customers alike. The title of his presentation is “Strong Words: Career Advancement through Personal Storytelling.”

The 15th anniversary of the Fox Film Festival is two weeks from today (Friday)! Be on the lookout for golden tickets that will be appearing in your mailboxes next week!

Friday, April 19, 4:30 p.m. – Historic Cameo Theater Screening
Tickets are $4 a person and $6 for two. They can be purchased with cash or check at the Box Office, the Cameo and from Film Festival Committee members: Carissa Gobble, Molly Norton and Sandra Conlon.

Saturday, April 20
The committee is excited to partner with Career Services in bringing the first-ever film festival networking event with local film professionals and alumni. It’s scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. (by invitation only).

At 5:30 p,m., the red-carpet photo booth will be open in the Bauman Auditorium lobby. Then, at 6:30 p.m., the Award Show will commence. This year our hosts are Tyler Robertson and Onjalai Flake. Admission is free!

This year, in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the festival, we are introducing in partnership with the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations, the first-ever Alumni Film & Media Award to Seth Himes, an alumnus from 2000 and also the founder of the Fox Film Festival in 1998.

All are invited to join the cinema and media communication department in celebrating the past 15 years and honoring our alumni and students for their hard work.

“Being Christian in Today’s Middle East” is the topic for our next “Intellectual Feast” on Tuesday, April 9.

What is life like for Christians in the modern Middle East? Is being a Christian in Palestine, Syria, Egypt, or Iraq more of an ethnic/racial distinction or a term to describe a “committed follower of Jesus”? What can we in the United States learn from our Christian brothers and sisters in the geographic location where our faith began?

George Fox student Moses Nijmeh (from Bethlehem) will be joined by friends from the Middle East to address these questions and more at our next feast, scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Hoover second-floor lounge.

Stop by the Stevens Center’s third floor this afternoon (Friday) between 3 and 5 p.m. to say goodbye to Sean McKay, who is leaving George Fox to go to Portland State University. Refreshments will be provided.

The university’s French and cinema programs have joined forces to present the second Fox French Film Festival on concurrent Fridays, April 5 and April 12.

Opening the festival will be The Intouchables, an irreverent, witty comedy about a paraplegic millionaire who hires a kid from the projects to be his caretaker. The film, which Claudia Puig calls an “exuberantly charming French buddy comedy,” is among the most successful French films in history. It shows at 7 p.m. tonight.

Also tonight, at 9 p.m., The Artist will be featured. The Artist, a modern silent that swept the Oscars last year, follows the rise and fall of a pair of actors during the transition to the Talkies.

Filmgoers will also have the chance to indulge in crepes and other French fare during the intermission between the shows. Both movies will show at the same times on the two Fridays. They will be in EHS 102 and are open to the public.
