This morning (Friday), Kathy Heininge, associate professor of English, will present key elements of the Modern Language Association (MLA) style for essays and other written works. MLA is commonly used in humanities courses such as English, literature and modern languages.

All are invited to the third installment of the spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Feb. 11, in Hoover 105. The theme of this spring’s lecture series is “State of the Union.”

Monday’s session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Robert Rayburn, senior pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, Wash. He will present “Future of the American Church,” in which he will address questions such as “What is the state of the church in North America today?” and “In light of cultural trends, what does the future hold for the church?”

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

The BlueZone Store will host a book sale in the Textbook Annex (basement floor of the library) during the week of Feb. 11. Employees (only) are invited to come on Monday for a chance to purchase books for personal use or departmental resources.

Paperbacks are $1, hardbacks are $2. Cash or cost center charge only. No returns or refunds. On Tuesday, the sale will open up to the general public. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.).

A TIAA-CREF representative will be on the Newberg campus (Cap and Gown Room) Wednesday, Feb. 13. Our previous rep, Shane Roghaar, has taken a new position with TIAA-CREF and moved out of the area, so Emily Everett will be here from the Seattle office for the day.

Michael MacLeod, an associate professor of politics and international studies and director of international studies, will present “Follow the Money: How Global Investor Networks Influence Multinational Corporations and Why It Matters to You and Me.”

Synopsis
Should businesses be concerned about climate change, the proliferation of toxic chemicals in our environment or violations of human rights? In the past decade, a growing segment of the international investor community is saying “yes” – and is using its collective financial power to influence corporate behavior across the world in unprecedented ways. Michael will explore this phenomenon and discuss its economic and political significance.

The university will host a volleyball tournament this weekend, so the gym in the Wheeler Sports Center will be unavailable for use both Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9-10. The Fitness Center and dance room will remain open.

Come support the theatre department by attending our winter production, Mrs. Packard. The show opens this week, running Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 7-10, and again Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 14-16, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, Feb. 10, show, scheduled as a 2 p.m. matinee.
