Spring Serve trips in need of employee, alumni advisors

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

We are in the process of planning and pulling together the teams for our annual Spring Serve trips (March 23-30). We have several organizations with whom we have annually partnered in service and are looking for current employee or alumni “advisors” to participate with our Serve Trip student-leaders. These individuals serve as university representatives, support the student leaders on their respective trips, and help keep these experiential ministry opportunities purposeful, successful, educational, and helpful to our hosts.

Our goal is for each trip to have two student leaders who are responsible for all trip coordination and team meetings. The job of the trip advisor would be to come alongside them and to offer support, wisdom, advice (especially in terms of risk-management), and general life-experience and spiritual guidance as the students lead the team.

If you are interested or have more questions, please contact Rusty St. Cyr at rstcyr@georgefox.edu or call ext. 2319. If you know of any alumni who are beyond two years of graduation who would be interested, please feel free to pass on this information to them. We hope to have the advisor roles filled by March 1.

Spring Serve trip descriptions can be found at this link.

Technology issues discussed at Spring Theological Conference March 4-6

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee will address issues related to technology in our lives when she comes to campus March 4-6 as guest speaker for the Spring Theological Conference.

The schedule for the week includes:

  • Monday, March 4 – “You’ve Been Hacked: How technology has taken you hostage (and how your parents are to blame),” chapel (10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium)
  • Tuesday, March 5 – “Finding Your Sweet Spot: Brain health and multiple intelligences information to help you increase engagement in your first (real) life,” Shalom (7 p.m. in Cap & Gown Room)
  • Wednesday, March 6 – “Pushing the Pause Button: Practical tips for learning to be still, bored, and centered,” chapel (10:40 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium)

Dr. Dodgen-Magee is a licensed psychologist, truth communicator and Jesus follower. She had one of the first computers in her class when she was a graduate student “a million years ago,” and was the last person in her family to get an iPhone. She is a reluctant geek and an avid reader of research.

Doreen is passionate about helping people experience life in all its richness, complexity, boredom and wonder. She fills her own time with seeing clients, speaking around the country, taking African dance lessons, doting on her kids (a college sophomore and high school senior), practicing contemplative prayer, and attempting to find the most shocking (and truth-telling) YouTube clips to share at places like George Fox University.

The Spring Theological Conference is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies. For more information, contact Paula Hampton at ext 2650. All sessions are open to the public.

Director of Portland outreach speaks on campus Feb. 26

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Paul Watson, director for Cityteam International’s recovery center in Portland, will outline his agency’s innovative outreach efforts and how they are applicable to local businesses and ministries when he speaks Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the monthly Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of the Northwest. The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex.

Watson split his childhood between Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and Singapore while his parents planted churches as career missionaries for the Southern Baptist Convention. Watson earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature at the University of North Texas and minored in business administration.

In 2007, through Cityteam (cityteam.org), Watson started training and coaching church planters and church planting organizations worldwide. In 2010, he traveled 75,000 miles and trained people in the United Kingdom, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Lebanon, Egypt, Germany, and through the U.S. In 2011, he traveled 85,000 miles.

Watson last year moved to Portland to take his current position. Cityteam Portland provides 72,000 meals a year. It helps, on average, 84 people per night, 365 days per year, to receive a shower, clean clothing and a safe place to sleep. Watson and his team seek to meet the physical needs of the homeless, addicted and alcoholic while seeking to catalyze disciple-making movements in the Northwest.

For more information on the meeting, visit christianchambernorthwest.com or call 503-928-8354.
