Accounting students offering free tax help this spring

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

The university’s Accounting Club is offering free tax preparation and e-filing assistance to employees and local residents. Dates for help sessions are four Saturdays: March 2 and 9 and April 6 and 13.

The Tax-Aide program is designed to help taxpayers prepare their returns. The service is especially geared toward senior citizens, students, individuals with lower incomes, and those who have limited English proficiency. Anyone, however, is eligible for assistance. The only exception is for those whose return is deemed too complicated.

Help will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each of the dates. All sessions will meet in Hoover 102 and 103. A sign-up sheet will be available 30 minutes before each session. All sessions are first come, first served.

Those seeking assistance are to bring photo identification, Social Security cards or individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, birthdates for family members, the current year’s tax package (if you received one), and all appropriate tax forms (W-2, 1099-INT and 1099-DIV, SSA-1099 or RRB-1099, 1099R, etc.).

If applicable, it is also advised that patrons bring a list of child tax credit information; a list of medical, taxes, interest, contributions and miscellaneous expenses; child and disabled dependent care information; bank routing and account numbers; and a copy of their 2011 federal and state returns, if available.

To e-file a joint return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. To find out more, contact Seth Sikkema at ext. 2813.

Please be sure to observe policy regarding staff parking permits

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

It has come to Security Service’s attention that several children of staff and faculty have been using their parents’ staff permit and car to drive to campus, and have been seen parking in staff lots and going to class. Unfortunately, this is a violation of the staff parking permit, which is to be used only by the staff member to whom it was assigned.

It isn’t an issue if your student always comes to school with you, but if they are driving one of your cars to school, they must register the car themselves and park in the proper non-staff lot. If both student and staff share a family car, the staff member should leave a note on the dashboard when it is them driving, and the student should take down the staff permit and park in the proper lot for their student permit when they are the driver.

If you have a vehicle situation that is outside of these parameters, please contact security at ext. 2090 or nkincaid@georgefox.edu and we will work together for a suitable solution.

Thanks!

Goldfish up for ‘adoption’ in biology department

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

Do you crave companionship? Unconditional devotion? You need a goldfish! Or a troubling of goldfish (I don’t know why a group of goldfish is called a “troubling,” since they are delightful companions.)

Come to the lab (EHS 202) during office hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and take yours home today. Ziploc travel containers provided for your new friend’s comfort and containment. I’ll meet you by the aquarium if you need help. Adoptions open until all find homes.
