How business and philanthropy mesh is topic of March 26 event

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

Can a mutually caring relationship hold the key to a new and effective means of philanthropy?

How a company in Vancouver, Wash., and dozens of Christian ministries are serving as an example will be outlined by Pat Johnson, executive director of US Digital Outreach, when she speaks Tuesday, March 26, at the monthly Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest.

The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

At US Digital, a manufacturing firm in Vancouver, a simple effort to provide office space turned into a vibrant and collaborative expression of community outreach. In her role, Johnson coordinates how 35 different ministries are accommodated in the upper floor of the company building. Johnson is also the former national director of World Vision/Love INC, former coordinator for Mission Portland Networking, and founder and director of several nonprofit ministries.

Check out business elective courses available next year

Monday, March 18th, 2013

Are you looking for a valuable upper-division elective course for next year? Check out the following courses that the School of Business will be offering:

BUSN 303 – Personal Finance (Fall ’13 & Spring ’14)

This course is designed to prepare students to think critically about their relationship with money, develop their own personal financial philosophy and implement practical application of personal financial management. Topics include relationship with money, biblical financial foundations, budgets, loans, spending, housing, insurance, investments and taxes.

Prerequisites: none; taught by Ryan Halley, finance professor, George Fox

MKTG 485 — Consumer Engagement and Social Networking (Fall ’13)

Marketing is all about connecting … connecting with your customer, connecting with management, connecting with money (budget), and connecting with retail. What is our business? Who are our customers? What does the customer value? Consumer engagement is not a single source of contact but an ongoing “conversation” – developing brand positioning, leveraging user-generated content, and creating a word-of-mouth social audience, all resulting in customer loyalty and influencing behavior. The questions haven’t changed BUT how we tell the story has.

Prerequisites: MKTG 260 (Principles of Marketing); taught by Laurie Koehler, Consumer Campaigns Manager, Intel

ECON 485 — Environmental Economics (Spring ’14)

Students will explore the relationship between the economy and the environment. The efficient management of natural resources, impacts of pollution, and sustainability issues will all be considered. To account for economic growth concerns the scope of analysis includes both the developed and developing world. The primary objective of the course is to increase students’ understanding of policy-relevant, incentive-based solutions to environmental issues.

Prerequisites: Either Econ 201 Microeconomics Principles or ECON 202 Macroeconomics Principles, or permission of the instructor; taught by Nate Peach, economics professor, George Fox

Questions? Contact Ryan Halley at halleyr@georgefox.edu.

New transportation policy at George Fox

Sunday, March 17th, 2013

For the past year, we’ve been in conversation with our risk management/insurance company as well as completed a comprehensive review of best practices to reduce risk and liability related to the transportation of students, faculty and staff. You will find the new policy at this link. Please review this very carefully and feel free to contact Plant Services or Brad Lau if you have any questions.

We are not yet ready to implement the personal vehicle aspect of the policy, but are ready to implement the policies and procedures guiding the use of university vehicles.

In order to check out and drive University vehicles (as well as to rent and drive Enterprise vehicles on university business), a student and/or employee driver must be on the “approved driver’s list.” This means that the following has occurred (a minimum of five days before the student or employee plans to pick up and drive a university vehicle):

  1. The student or employee has read and agreed to the policy.
  2. The student or employee has viewed the 15-minute training video.
  3. The student or employee has taken a quiz that requires approximately 10-15 minutes.
  4. A background check of the student’s or employee’s driving record has been completed and meets the criteria described in the university policy.

Once all this has been completed and verified (and assuming all the criteria are met), the employee’s or student’s name will be added to the approved driver’s list and university vehicles can be checked out and driven. This process will need to be completed annually for students and once every three years for employees. Of course, there is much more information in the policy, so please review it carefully.

To begin the process of becoming an approved driver, please login to FoxTALE on this page and follow directions.

The new policy is effective immediately, so please take care of this as soon as possible if you plan to drive a university vehicle on university business. When you pick up the vehicle, you will need to show Plant Services your driver’s license and verbally verify that you have current personal automobile insurance (even though university insurance provides coverage for the use of university vehicles).
