Make sure to see the 24 1/2-Hour Play Festival tonight (Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium. The performance runs about half an hour, and everything you see is written, cast, rehearsed and prepared all in 24 1/2 hours.

Benefit open enrollment ends Monday, March 17

Attention benefit-eligible employees: Please make sure you turn in your benefit election form by 5 p.m. Monday, March 17, to ensure that any changes you wish to make will be enrolled timely. Remember that medical and dental changes will be reflected in your premium deductions on the March 31 payroll, and all other benefit changes will show the first time on April 30.

Also remember that flexible spending enrollments don’t automatically renew, so if you want to keep that benefit next year, please submit a new form. All forms and more info are available here.

OHSU professor Thornburg speaks on campus Monday

All are invited to join us for the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, March 17, as Kent Thornburg, the M. Lowell Edwards Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme “State of the World.”

Thornburg will speak on “Capitalism and Selling Sickness in the USA,” in which he will discuss how many Americans have come to rely on free marketing products for their nutrition, how food is designed to be highly palatable, how the food that we eat is making us less healthy, and how poor health today will be passed on to future generations through epigenetic mechanisms.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Bring ‘found’ items to security by 10 a.m. Monday

Please put it on your schedule to stop by and check for your lost items, as everything not claimed by its owner will be donated to charitable causes Monday afternoon. You can also stop by the security office or call 503-554-2090 during office hours to inquire about your lost items.

Alex Pia speaks in International Chapel this morning

Join us this morning (Friday) for International Chapel from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in the International Center/Cultural House. This week Alex Pia, director of international student services, will speak on God’s leading in his own life and how he has seen God working in students’ lives. You are welcome to come, listen, ask questions and be encouraged.

International Chapel is eligible for chapel elective credit. Keep in mind, the last International Chapel for spring semester will be April 18. The event is designed to help us better understand what it means to be a Christian. Everyone is invited to attend.

Year-end dates to remember from financial affairs office

The end of another academic year is once again just around the corner. As your department makes plans to wrap things up for the year, please take a moment to put the following important dates on your calendar and include them in your year-end planning.

We will be sending out regular reminders as we get closer to these important 2014 financial cut-off dates. Please make sure to submit all needed paperwork to the financial affairs office prior to these dates.

  • May 31 – Last day to submit purchase orders for fiscal year 2014 (FY14) expenses
  • June 16 – Last day to request cash advances for FY14 expenses
  • July 11 – Last day to submit invoices, check requests, expense reimbursements, petty cash, error corrections, and interdepartmental charges for FY14
  • Please make sure to turn in any outstanding deposits before leaving for the summer break.

Note change to Textbook Annex closure dates

Change to previous announcement: The Textbook Annex will be open next week (March 17-21). It will not be staffed during spring break, but the main BlueZone Store will be open and we’ll be happy to service any immediate textbook needs. Both locations will be closed for the campus holiday on Friday, March 28.

IJM presents film ‘Chosen’ tonight at Shalom

The International Justice Mission invites you to join us tonight (Thursday) as we watch and discuss the documentary Chosen, which shares the lives of two American girls who were trafficked. We will talk about what we can do to help prevent girls and boys we know from being sold into sex trafficking.

Physical therapist’s presentation is tonight

Don’t forget to join the Department of Physical Therapy today (Thursday) for Dr. Diane Wrisley’s presentation from 5 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Dr. Wrisley has published numerous articles and presented at national and international conferences on the evaluation and treatment of patients with vestibular and balance dysfunction. Her research interests include the use of sensory information for balance and novel techniques in the evaluation and treatment of vestibular and balance dysfunction.

In preparation for Thursday’s presentation, Dr. Wrisley has reviewed 70 recent articles on Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Some of the learning objectives for the lecture are:

  • Briefly describe the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
  • Briefly describe the pathophysiology of BPPV
  • Describe the evaluation and intervention techniques for BPPV
  • Relate new findings in the evaluation and treatment for BPPV

Textbook Annex closed March 15-30

The Textbook Annex will be closed for two weeks beginning March 15 to complete our annual inventory process. You may still order online at gfubookstore.com and have your books sent to your campus box or home address. Online orders will be processed, but the Annex will not be staffed for in-store sales.

Please note: The main BlueZone Store will remain open for business through March 27. Both locations will be closed on Friday, March 28.

Student Art Exhibit opens Thursday

More than 75 pieces created by our own student artists will go on exhibit beginning Thursday, March 13, in both the Minthorne and Lindgren galleries.

The event begins with an opening reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in both locations. The exhibit will remain up through Monday, April 14. The show represents students’ best pieces as determined by outside jurors. Initially, more than 200 pieces were submitted. Prize winners will be announced at the reception.

In addition, remaining bowls from last week’s Empty Bowls fundraiser will be available for purchase in the Lindgren Gallery during the reception time.

Former President Le Shana speaks at auxiliary lunch Friday

The George Fox Auxiliary invites the university community to the latest installment of a series of luncheons featuring the theme “Reflections on Pacific College/GFC/GFU History.” This Friday, March 14, David Le Shana, former president of George Fox, will present “Reflections on the 1969-1982 Presidency” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

Tickets are still available for Kenn Willson’s piano concert Thursday, March 13, in Bauman Auditorium. Willson, a Bösendorfer Educational Artist and professor of music history and keyboard studies, will present his “Encounters with Beethoven” concert at 7:30 p.m.

Employees and students are entitled to one complimentary ticket each. They can be picked up in the Box Office located in the Pennington House. Additional tickets may be purchased on this page.

Willson will perform German Dance #1, Sonata Op. 31 #3, Sonata Op. 27 #2 (“Moonlight”) and Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee (Tune: Ode to Joy).

The School of Physical Therapy invites the university community to hear Dr. Diane Wrisley, PT, PhD, NCS, Thursday, March 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. She will be speaking on “Update on BPPV for the Clinician.”

Dr. Wrisley received her BS in physical therapy from the University at Buffalo, a MS from Old Dominion University and a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University.
