“Consider Leviathan” is the title of the Fall Faculty Lecture featuring the university’s 2014 Undergraduate Researcher of the Year, Brian Doak, PhD. This presentation will explore Doak’s research in the narratives found in the Book of Job.

Join us tomorrow (Tuesday) for the presentation. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. in Hoover 105, and refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee.

Prior to the lecture that evening, the 2014 Fall Richter Student Scholars Symposium is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. Student scholars from George Fox graduate and undergraduate programs will present their research in a conversational poster format. Refreshments included.

‘Islam and Sub-Saharan Africa’ discussed tonight

The campus community is invited to the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series tonight (Monday) in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features Joellyn Fountain, a visiting assistant professor of political science and international studies this year at George Fox.

Fountain will present “Islam and Sub-Saharan Africa,” in which she will discuss the fact that the number of Muslims in the Sub-Saharan region is growing along with their political and social influence.

Christianity in Syria discussed at honors lecture Oct. 30

Christian SahnerChristian C. Sahner, author of Among the Ruins: Syria Past and Present (Oxford University Press, 2014), will speak on campus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in Hoover 103. The campus community is invited to attend at no charge.

Sahner’s lecture, “The End of Christianity in Syria?,” will explore the roots of Christianity in Syria and seek to place the current predicament in historical perspective. The William Penn Honors Program is sponsoring this lecture, and a reception for prospective students interested in the honors program will follow. In addition, a special “Visit Day for the Honors Program” is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31. Please email honors@georgefox.edu if you would like more information or have any questions.

A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, Sahner is currently completing his doctorate at Princeton, focusing on relations between Muslims and Christians in the formative period after the Arab conquests.

The show runs Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 23-25, and Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the Sunday, Nov. 2, performance, scheduled as a 2 p.m. matinee.

All university students and employees may receive one complimentary ticket per production. Complimentary tickets are not transferrable and require a current GFU ID to be shown at the door. Synopsis: One of Shakespeare’s most celebrated comedies, Twelfth Night features Viola’s cross-dressing misadventures as she tries to figure out love and survival in a world of lovesick men. Hilarious reversals and bittersweet misunderstandings ensue, as Viola introduces her ambiguous identity to the misfit oddballs of Illyria – and steals more than one heart in the process. Join us for an evening of buoyant wordplay, raucous slapstick and some of the wittiest love scenes in all of Shakespeare.

Hartsough is a Quaker and serves as the director of the San Francisco-based Peaceworkers. He is also cofounder of the Nonviolent Peaceforce. Come join us for a lunch hour talk and conversation moderated by Tom Head, professor of economics at George Fox. The event is sponsored by the Center for Peace and Justice.

Come see St. John’s Bible in Stevens atrium this Friday

St. John's BibleThe university community is invited to explore portions of the St. John’s Bible at a special presentation from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the Stevens Center’s Duke Atrium. The project began in 1998 at Saint John’s Abbey and St. John’s University, which commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible.

Come see a work of art that unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium. The Gospels and Acts will be on display, along with several individual art pieces from the series.

In addition, Brad Neary, representative for the project, and Paul Anderson, professor of biblical studies at George Fox, will present short talks on topics related to the Bible and its artwork.

Stop by the atrium and enjoy the St. John’s Bible!

On Friday, we will host a Classic Bruins Supper (5-7 p.m. in Cap and Gown Room); a reunion for Dayspring members (6-8 p.m. at Friendsview); a men’s soccer game against Willamette (6 p.m.); and a jazz concert featuring New York-based drummer Matt Wilson (7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium).

On Saturday, morning events include a Dayspring reunion breakfast (9-10 a.m.) and concert (10 a.m.), a department open house and networking gathering (9:30 a.m.), and class reunions (for the classes of 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004) from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The afternoon/evening schedule includes a women’s soccer game against Lewis & Clark (noon), a football game against Puget Sound (1:30 p.m.), an Alumni and Sports Hall of Fame Awards event (5-8 p.m.), and a “World’s Got Talent” variety show (8 p.m.).

Homecoming football game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday

It’s homecoming week, Bruins, and that means there’s a football game tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon against Puget Sound that you won’t want to miss. Students and staff will receive free entry into the game with their ID cards; all other guests can purchase their tickets in advance via our website.
