Know students who need help with MLA style?

Know of students who need help with MLA style? Encourage them to attend a workshop, “An Introduction to MLA Style,” this Thursday, Nov. 6, from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105.

In this session, Kathy Heininge, associate professor of English, will present key elements of the Modern Language Association style for essays and other written works. MLA is commonly used in humanities courses such as English, literature and modern languages. The workshop is sponsored by the Academic Resource Center.

History of rock and roll offered as class this spring

Do you enjoy rock music? The music department is offering the class for you: The History of Rock and Roll (MUSI 285-B Special Topics #3747)! It will be offered during Spring 2015 and meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 to 11:50 a.m. in Ross 208.

Mail Services serves as drop site for all Oregon ballots

Arrangements have been made with the Yamhill County Elections Office for Mail Services to serve as a drop site for all Oregon ballots. We accept any Oregon ballot (any county), and there is no postage necessary.

The deadline for this drop-off site is 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. All out-of-state ballots must be mailed with postage. If you have questions, email Linda Sartwell at lsartwel@georgefox.edu.

Reminder: Chinese class for employees meets today

If you are interested in learning basic Chinese phrases and a little more about Chinese culture, join us today (Friday) from noon to 12:50 p.m. in the International Center/Cultural House, as our visiting professors from China will teach Chinese language and culture to employees.

This is the first session that will meet weekly Friday at the same time and location. We hope you will be able to join us!

Finance Facts: Special Operations and Restricted Fund Reporting

Special operations and restricted fund reporting is now available in PeopleSoft. Under the MyGFU report menu, select “Restricted Fund Summary.” This summary report will give you balance forward information as well as any 14/15 activity.

This can be used for all Special Operations, Restricted Gifts and Agency Funds. Remember, you may now have two funds – one special operations fund (unrestricted, which will begin with a 1XXXX) and a restricted fund (which will begin with a 3XXXX). You can use the wild card (%) for the department/cost center field and the program code.

Previous-year data is also available in this report by using your old cost center number and the 2014 fiscal year.

BlueZone Store closes early on Friday

Portland Youth Philharmonic performs in Bauman Monday

The Portland Youth Philharmonic will perform a preview concert opening their 91st season in Bauman Auditorium on Monday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge and seating is general.

Th program includes Richard Wagner’s Dawn and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey from Gotterdamerung; Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances; and Norman Leyden’s Serenade for Strings.

Deadline for Title IX and sexual harassment training is today

The deadline for Title IX and sexual harassment training is today (Thursday, Oct. 30).

If you would like to review the details about each of these trainings, please check your email in-box for a message from Peggy Kilburg dated Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 2:52 p.m. entitled “Important Training for George Fox Employees.” Or you can simply begin the training.

To take the George Fox sexual harassment online training, you will need to refer to an email you received yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 29, entitled “Training Alert from George Fox University.” It has the credentials (user name, company ID and password) and link you will need to access the training.

Alumna from Afghanistan shares this Monday night

The campus community is invited to the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Nov. 3, in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features alumna Suhila Haidary, who will speak on the topic “Trapped in the Crossfire: Women and Children Under the Taliban.”

Haidary was a child of 6 when the Taliban took over Afghanistan. She will share on the experience of women and children during and after Taliban rule, highlighting the artificial divisions and injustices created by radical Islamist rule. The same session is presented from 5 to 6 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

A workshop today (Thursday) is for them. Sue O’Donnell, associate professor of psychology, will cover American Psychological Association citation and reference formatting, along with several guidelines for writing in APA style.

EdTechWomen was inspired by women’s influence in the field of education and technology. Our chapter promotes and brings together a multidisciplinary group of women focused on leveraging technology to promote stronger schools, human services and businesses through the values of community, inclusivity, visibility and impact. Are you willing to facilitate a small group during our meeting? We are looking for K-12 and higher ed educators, and tech-focused business women. We will be asking you to share a bit about your work, and then share how technology is influencing changes within your work, home and personal life.

The Fall Staff Conference is next Wednesday, Nov. 5, and we are looking forward to an exciting day with all support staff! Please complete this registration form and select your break-out session if you haven’t done so already. The theme of this year’s conference is “Sowing, Watering, Reaping.”

The conference is from 8 to 11:30 a.m., with breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. for early risers. Our keynote speaker is Deb Mumm-Hill, director of the university’s IDEA Center. The conference will be at Mountain Park Church, 40 McNary Parkway, in Lake Oswego. Please note: Due to allergies, please do not wear perfume or cologne at this event.
