First ‘Islam and the West’ lecture is tonight

Sunday, August 31st, 2014

Don’t forget to join us for the first Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture of the semester tonight (Monday), as Shahriar Ahmed, president of the Bilal Mosque Association, speaks from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme for this fall, “Islam and the West.”

Ahmed will speak on “The Five Pillars: Comparing and Contrasting Islam with the Other Abrahamic Faiths.” The talk will cover the basics, tasks and rituals that describe the life of a Muslim – rituals sustained for more than 1,400 years without a formal church and non-negotiable aspects of the faith. An open Q&A session will follow.

The same session is presented from 5 to 6 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Questions? Contact Paul Otto at ext. 2676 or potto@georgefox.edu.

A few Serve Day reminders

Sunday, August 31st, 2014

Just a couple days left until Serve Day! On Wednesday, Sept. 3, we’ll spread throughout the community to serve those around us. Just a few reminders:

  • If employees need to order a lunch (team leaders and committee members receive free lunches), complete this form.
  • Employees are encouraged to park on the gravel lot (down Meridian Street near Fulton Street) on Serve Day unless they were specifically assigned to drive to a serve site. If so, a parking lot/departure site is assigned, which can be found on their email about Serve Day.
  • We encourage students and faculty to bring their own water bottles on Serve Day in order to reduce the plastic waste at the end of the day.

Campus dining options available

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

Now that we’ve finished cooking and serving more than 25,000 meals over the past week and we’re finally catching our breath, we felt it was time to remind everyone of the multiple dining options on campus.

Bruin Bucks: Available to everyone including staff, faculty and students with a valid GFU ID card that works like a debit card, we offer a 10 percent bonus to everyone who puts $50 or more on their ID card. It can then be used at any of our three retail cafe’s on campus (Bruin Den, Bruin Bites and Villa Café).

Lunch Club Card: Available exclusively to faculty and staff, this punch card offers 15 lunches in Klages Dining Room for just $60. Our “all you care to eat” options include a full salad bar; multiple hot entrees including vegetarian, vegan and made without gluten; artisan-style pizza; deli items; and a multitude of other foods and beverages giving you a great opportunity to interact and sit with students or other staff/faculty.

Both are very easy to sign up and use. Just visit our Bon Appetit offices in the rear of the commons, bring your ID card and cash/credit card or check, and we’ll do the rest.

Our menus are posted weekly along with great nutritional information at cafebonappetit.com/georgefox.

Please feel free to give us a call at ext. 2500 or just drop by if you have any questions.
