Have you heard the big news? The women’s basketball team is just one win away from a perfect season! Come support the team this Friday evening as they try to earn their spot in the history books. They play at 6 p.m. in the gym against Lewis & Clark, and are followed at 8 p.m. by the men’s game.

Community Garden work party organized for Saturday

All are welcome to join in helping us work in the George Fox Community Garden this Saturday, Feb. 21! Between 1 and 3 p.m. we will be doing various tasks to prepare the garden to grow some delicious veggies this semester and throughout the summer.

If you need a ride, or don’t know how to get there, meet outside of Hoover at 12:50 p.m. to catch a shuttle. The new garden is located near the new soccer field and Joan Austin Elementary School. Chapel credit is available!

Tech women gather for spring event at Portland Center March 7

“Twitter for Professional Development, Teaching and Learning​” is the topic of the EdTechWomen-Portland Spring Event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 7, at the Portland Center (Room 155).

EdTechWomen-Portland is the Oregon chapter of ​the national ETW,​ whose purpose is to support women’s use of technology in education and business. The event is open to all supporters of this mission.

Join coauthors Daniel Brunner, A.J. Swoboda and Jennifer Butler tomorrow (Thursday) for an interactive panel and discussion about how our ecotheology influences what we think about stewardship, eschatology and God’s intervention in the world.

Macy, Terry present tonight on ‘St. John’s Bible’

The university community is invited to the semester’s second guest lecture about the historic Saint John’s Bible. Tonight (Wednesday), George Fox’s Howard Macy and Mark Terry will present “Light from the Hebrew Scriptures” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. Chapel credit is available for students.

In addition, this Friday, Feb. 20, Paul Anderson will continue his “Turning of the Page” series regarding the Bible from 4 to 4:30 p.m. in the MLRC.

The Saint John’s Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible to have been commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey (Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.) since the invention of the printing press. Movie and panel discussion on ‘Son of God’ set for Feb. 24

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, the university community is invited to a showing of the movie Son of God (2014), produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, in Hoover 105.

The movie will be shown from 6 to 8:20 p.m. Afterwards, we’ll host a panel discussion (8:30-9:30 p.m.), as well as time for questions/engagement with the panelists. Panelists will include Melanie Springer Mock, Sarah Gibson, Paul Anderson, Josh Sweeden and Jesse Richards.

This event, hosted by the BIBL 102B, 102C, 260A and 260B classes, qualifies for elective chapel credit. We’ll also have snacks.

Latino Heritage Club hosts Spoken Word Night March 5

The Latino Heritage Club invites you to join us for our Spoken Word Night on Thursday, March 5, at 8:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Our theme is “Forgiveness and Love.” With the event being just the week after February, we though this theme was fitting. Contrary to what may be an initial reaction, it is not a cheesy Valentine’s Day theme. A new semester is an opportunity for a fresh start. Sometimes that may mean letting go of grudges, mending relationships and welcoming love.

The university’s 2015 Woolman Peacemaking Forum is set for next Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The theme of this year’s forum, “Past, Present & Future: Promoting Peace and Justice at George Fox University and Beyond,” will include a number of events throughout the day. Our guest speaker will be Jason Fileta, director of Micah Challenge USA.

Schedule of Events:

  • 10:50-11:40 a.m. – Woolman Peacemaking Forum: Main morning session at chapel, “Something about Mary,” delivered by Fileta. Bauman Auditorium.
  • Noon – 1 p.m. – Faculty and Staff Lunch: Faculty and staff are invited to share lunch with guest Fileta, who will talk about his new book Live Justly, a guide to help people live justly in six key areas of life. Cost is only $3. Cap and Gown Room.
  • 3-5 p.m. – “Connections Expo,” a networking event co-sponsored by the IDEA Center, is an opportunity for all majors seeking a vocation in peace and justice to attend. Meet academic programs and external organizations offering projects and internship opportunities in the areas of work related to peace and justice. Cap and Gown Room.

Scholar speaks today on early Judean identity formation

Allen Jones (PhD, Corban University) will speak today (Tuesday) on early Judean identity formation in the wake of the Babylonian exile and the subsequent return to the land. The “Intellectual Feast” will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 250. The talk will focus primarily on the book of Ruth and its contribution to the period, but other Second Temple texts (e.g. Ezra-Nehemiah, Chronicles, Pauline literature) will also enter the conversation.

Don’t forget to join the College of Business’ Executive in Residence presentation this Thursday, Feb. 19, as Martin Daum, president and CEO of Daimler Trucks North America, speaks at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. There is no charge to attend, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Daum will speak on the topic “How Does Christian Faith Help Me in My Business?” He was appointed to his current position at Daimler Trucks North America in June 2009 and is in charge of visionary responsibilities for the company and its affiliated companies.
