Wind farms and wind energy discussed tomorrow

The College of Engineering invites the university community to its fourth “Earth, Wind, Fire and Water” lecture event tomorrow (Thursday) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Lemmons 13. The event is titled “Wind Farms and Wind Energy Systems” and features Bruce Hamilton of Navigant.

This is the fourth of five presentations in the series, dedicated to renewable energy, sustainability, climate change and the environment. The final lecture will be Thursday, Nov. 13, when George Fox engineering professor Chad Stillinger presents “Ocean Wave Energy Systems” in Hoover 105.

Students host free pizza night for veterans and their families

Attention George Fox students and employees: If you are a U.S. military veteran or currently in the Reserves, we want to welcome you and your family to Abby’s Pizza in Newberg this Monday, Nov. 10, (the day before Veteran’s Day) between 6 and 8 p.m. We will serve you pizza, potatoes and soft drinks for free.

Thank you to all who helped with the 10th annual Choral Conductors Symposium this past weekend. More than 350 students from six area high schools attended this event.

It was noted by one American Choral Directors Association and OSAA official that George Fox University is only one of two universities in Oregon that help promote excellence in music education by providing on-campus workshops for directors and students.

Role of Christians in politics discussed at Thursday forum

All students and employees are welcome to attend the third installment of the student life discussion series “Symposium: A Forum for Uncommon Conversations.” Our topic for this week is “Church and State: The Role of Christians in Politics.”

Share your culture at next week’s Cultural Fair

Cultural Celebration Week is again scheduling a Cultural Fair, which will include an opportunity for students to share their cultures with our community by hosting a booth during the fair.

The booth consists of a table that can display any variety of cultural artifacts or information, as well as food or activities. Cultures represented in the past included various countries and regions, as well as domestic cultures such as African-American, Hispanic, Texan or Hawaiian. Everyone has a unique culture that they can share!

The Cultural Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Bruin Den. Students organizing their booths can be reimbursed up to $35 for money spent on decorations, posters, food, or anything else that would help them display their culture.

CMCO class hosts open auditions for film projects

The CMCO Intermediate Directing class is hosting open auditions for roles in its final projects tonight (Tuesday) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Auditions are open to both students and employees.

These will be short, two- to five-minute films in a variety of styles, and will typically be shot in a few hours during the weekends of Nov. 15-16 or Nov. 22-23. There is no compensation, but actors will be well fed and will receive a copy of the finished film.

Auditions will take place in the Media Center, at the corner of North and Meridian streets. Please sign up for a time slot on the theatre bulletin board in Lemmons, or just show up at the Media Center.

Actors should come prepared with a short monologue, or we’ll have short scenes available at the check-in desk.

Alumna from Afghanistan speaks tonight

Join us tonight (Monday) for the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture featuring alumna Suhila Haidary, who will speak on the topic “Trapped in the Crossfire: Women and Children Under the Taliban.” The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Haidary was a child of 6 when the Taliban took over Afghanistan. She will share on the experience of women and children during and after Taliban rule, highlighting the artificial divisions and injustices created by radical Islamist rule.

Know students who need help with MLA style?

Know of students who need help with MLA style? Encourage them to attend a workshop, “An Introduction to MLA Style,” this Thursday, Nov. 6, from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105.

In this session, Kathy Heininge, associate professor of English, will present key elements of the Modern Language Association style for essays and other written works. MLA is commonly used in humanities courses such as English, literature and modern languages. The workshop is sponsored by the Academic Resource Center.
