The Saint John’s Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible to have been commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey (Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.) since the invention of the printing press. The Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible is the full-size fine art reproduction of the original.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, the university community is invited to a showing of the movie Son of God (2014), produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, in Hoover 105.
The movie will be shown from 6 to 8:20 p.m. Afterwards, we’ll host a panel discussion (8:30-9:30 p.m.), as well as time for questions/engagement with the panelists. Panelists will include Melanie Springer Mock, Sarah Gibson, Paul Anderson, Josh Sweeden and Jesse Richards.
This event, hosted by the BIBL 102B, 102C, 260A and 260B classes, qualifies for elective chapel credit. We’ll also have snacks.

Our theme is “Forgiveness and Love.” With the event being just the week after February, we though this theme was fitting. Contrary to what may be an initial reaction, it is not a cheesy Valentine’s Day theme. A new semester is an opportunity for a fresh start. Sometimes that may mean letting go of grudges, mending relationships and welcoming love.

Allen Jones (PhD, Corban University) will speak today (Tuesday) on early Judean identity formation in the wake of the Babylonian exile and the subsequent return to the land. The “Intellectual Feast” will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 250. The talk will focus primarily on the book of Ruth and its contribution to the period, but other Second Temple texts (e.g. Ezra-Nehemiah, Chronicles, Pauline literature) will also enter the conversation.

Make plans to attend a free concert commemorating a recent upgrade to the university’s pipe organ in Bauman Auditorium. The Organ Dedication Concert, featuring musicians Dan Miller on organ and Kenn Willson on piano, will take the Bauman stage at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 20. General seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The university recently purchased a Rodgers Digital Organ. By the use of digital technology, the organ’s original pipes have been connected to the digital organ. In doing so, the university preserved the original pipe organ installed in the early 1980s while greatly enhancing the quality of sound.
The program will include the selections Toccata and Fugue in D-minor by Bach, a patriotic tribute including the Navy Hymn, a medley from The Phantom of the Opera and one piano and organ duet on the tune Lord of the Dance (arranged by Joel Raney).

Vesterfelt is the cofounder of Prodigal Magazine and author of Packing Light, a book about learning to live with less, in which she writes about her journey to becoming a full-time author, the challenges of uncovering and maintaining a vocation she loves, and how she discovered her own unique voice through the art of writing.
