Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Friends educators from colleges, universities and study centers globally will gather for the annual Friends Association for Higher Education Conference, scheduled June 18-21 on the university’s Newberg campus. This year’s theme is “Truth and Transformation” and will feature plenary speakers Haven Kimmel, Bill Jolliff, Jon Kershner and Margery Post Abbott.

A highlight of the weekend will be the presentation of First Lady Lou, a one-woman dramatization of the life of Lou Hoover, performed by actress Jane Fellows, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and university employees, and $5 for students.

After the play, a “talk-back” session with Fellows and Leslie Hoover-Lauble, great-granddaughter of Herbert and Lou Hoover, will be moderated by Rachel Thomas, university archivist.

Workshop sessions Friday and Saturday cover a broad range of topics, from pedagogy in Quaker education, seeking peace in Rwanda, transformational learning in Israel/Palestine, and gender diversity in higher education, to Quakers in literature, theatre, music, and business and economics. Several presentations will engage “Quakers and Literature” as part of a new book series featuring Quaker contributions to academic disciplines.
