Encourage student to attend a workshop, “Charting Your Academic Path: MyGFU, Course Selection & Effective Planning,” tomorrow (Thursday).

In this session, CAP Coaches from the IDEA Center will give tips on how to use the degree audit, online catalog, class schedule and other resources. They will also discuss options if students are concerned about their midterm grades.

The workshop runs from 10:50 to 11:35 a.m. in Lemmons 8.

The registrar’s office is currently seeking an associate registrar. This position would provide leadership to key office personnel; manage relations with administrative offices; maintain university catalog and degree audit systems; provide functional systems administration; and administer registrar policies.

The university community is invited to the 2016 Spring Faculty Lecture, “Superheroes, School Counselors, Professional Identity & Getting the Job Done,” featuring Lori DeKruyf, PhD, professor of counseling and recipient of the 2014-15 Graduate Faculty Achievement Award for Research and Scholarship.

Join us on Tuesday, March 15, for the presentation. The lecture runs from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. Lori will explore what happens when training and professional identity are at odds with job assignments – for “superheroes” and for school counselors – and offer suggestions as to what might be done. The event is sponsored by the Richter Committee and the Faculty Development Committee.

Prior to the lecture that evening, the 2016 Spring Richter Student Scholars Symposium is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Hoover lobby. Student scholars from George Fox graduate and undergraduate programs will present their research in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be served in both the symposium and lecture.

This Thursday, March 10, students will get the opportunity to meet the candidates running for U.S. Senate in Oregon at a Candidate Debate Forum from 6 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105.

This is a great opportunity to learn about candidates’ views and even talk with them during the meet-and-greet portion of the evening. Candidates will discuss hot-button topics, including abortion, environmental issues and gun laws. Both Democrats and Republicans will be attending.

Join us as we watch a documentary about Motown (the company that produced The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and more). We will explore how Motown helped foster racial reconciliation in the U.S. and examine the role music can play in bringing about social change.

The university will host a free Chehalem Symphony Orchestra performance at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) in Bauman Auditorium.

The concert will feature Intermezzo Sinfonico by Pietro Mascagni, Symphony No. 8 “The Unfinished” by Franz Schubert, Concerto No. 1 in D Minor by Bach, and Poet and Peasant Overture by Franz Von Suppe. Pat Vandehey serves as conductor of the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra.

On Thursday, March 10, the George Fox chapter of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the university’s politics department are co-hosting a U.S. Senate candidate forum on the Newberg campus.

Sam Carpenter (R), Mark Callahan (R), Dan Laschober (R), Faye Stewart (R) and Kevin Stine (D) have all confirmed that they will be in attendance. This bipartisan forum is designed for students and Oregonians to get to know the candidates and their platforms.

The university community is invited to attend a free lecture featuring Lauren Winner, author and assistant professor of spirituality at Duke Divinity School, at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Monday) in Bauman Auditorium.

Winner is the author of numerous books, including Girl Meets God, Wearing God and Mudhouse Sabbath. The lecture she will present is titled “Wearing God: Encountering Overlooked Biblical Metaphors for God.”

Her recent memoir, Still: Notes on a Mid-faith Crisis, was named a “Best Book of 2012” in the religion category by Publishers Weekly and was a Christianity Today 2013 Book Award winner in the spirituality category. Her book on overlooked biblical images of God, Wearing God, was published by HarperOne in the spring of 2015. Her books will be on sale in the Bauman lobby after her presentation.

Winner has appeared on PBS’s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture and Christianity Today. She has degrees from Duke, Columbia and Cambridge universities, and she holds a PhD in history.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the William Penn Honors Program, the College of Christian Studies and the Office of Spiritual and Intercultural Life. Chapel credit is available.

Join us for a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture tonight (Monday), when Johnny Lake, assistant professor of education and counseling at Northwest Christian University, speaks on the topic “Creating a Civil Society” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Horrific lethal violence engulfs America. Why is this happening? Can we do anything to stop it?  We cannot answer these questions if we focus only on overt physical forms of violence.  Culture, beliefs and ideologies shape and define acts of violence, including physical attacks and assaults on people’s humanity, personhood, dignity and sense of value.

We are not doomed to be violent by nature or genetics. Rather, incivility and violence are embedded in social, cultural and environmental factors. Can we truly love God, whom we have not seen, and practice incivility and violence against our brothers and sisters?
