Life Groups are in high demand with our undergraduates this fall! We are only a few days into our promoting period and already all of our evening Life Groups are full.

We still have space in most of our daytime Life Groups, but we could use a few more faculty/staff/spouses/alumni members to offer evening groups ,either in their home or on campus. If you are interested, please sign up this week at this link.

We have a Life Group leader lunch tomorrow (Friday) from noon to 1:30 p.m. Groups begin the week of Sept. 18 and end the week of Nov. 7 (eight weeks in length).

If you’ve been wanting to learn more about the specific Google Apps you use, take a look at Google’s new “in app” training and help feature using Chrome web browser.

Training for Google Apps acts like a virtual coach within any of the Google Apps products, which includes Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Groups, Sites and more. View the recent post in Techtips from IT to learn how to activate the virtual coach. While you’re there, subscribe to Techtips to receive future tips and new updates from the IT department.

You are invited to attend and help spread the word for a six-week leadership workshop that is being hosted by athletics. You don’t have to be an athlete or coach to be part of Bruins LEAD. It is simply an opportunity to develop your leadership skills.

We will take basic leadership concepts and spend one hour diving into details of how to develop responsible and respected leaders.

Each week, you will get to hear from one of our coaches on the following topics:

• Sept. 15 – Neal Ninteman on “Exploring Leadership and How to Get and Keep Yourself Motivated”
• Sept. 22 – Marty Hunter on “Confidence and Composure”
• Sept. 29 – Maco Hamilton on “How to Conduct Yourself With Class and Servant Leadership”
• Oct. 13 – Mike Meek on “How to Inspire Your Team and How to Build Winning Team Chemistry”
• Oct. 20 – Branden Thompson on “How to Get Your Teammates Back on Track”
• Oct. 27 – Jessica Hollen on “How to Manage Team Conflict”

All sessions take place from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. in Hoover 102.

While some of the content may be specific to athletics and teams, we feel strongly that every person will end up working in a team at some point in their lives and this information can be relevant for everyone on campus.

Thursday, Sept. 15, is our first session. We would love to see you there!

The university community is invited to attend a free lecture featuring Todd Breyfogle, director of seminars at the Aspen Institute. The lecture will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in Hoover 105.

Breyfogle will speak on “The Earthly City and the Ethics of Exchange: Augustine on the Spiritual Economy.” He earned a BA at Colorado College in classics-history-politics and attended Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, where he read ancient and modern history and patristic and modern theology. Breyfogle earned a PhD at the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought and has written numerous essays and book chapters about St. Augustine.

A reception will immediately follow the lecture. Program director Joseph Clair will be in attendance.

Come join local pastors and other leaders for a special presentation and discussion on “How We Got the Bible” by noted author and New Testament scholar, Lee McDonald, on Friday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. As part of the time, we will serve coffee and refreshments in the Canyon Commons. Lee will also be speaking on the Jesus of history and faith in Nijay Gupta’s New Testament class at the seminary at 1 p.m. on Sept. 15, as well as on the canonization of the Old Testament in Paul Anderson’s Bible Lit class at 1 p.m. on Sept. 16 (Hoover 105). All are welcome!

A Grandpa Roy Memorial display has been constructed near the front desk of the Murdock Learning Resource Center (library). Students and employees are invited to stop by to learn more about the life of Roy Hiebert, who was a constant presence on this campus for more than 40 years before passing away in June.

On display is the briefcase he carried every day on his visits to campus. Those who wish to are invited to write a note, a memory, or a thought and leave it with the display. Please feel free to bring your own cards or use the note cards provided. Everything left will be given to Grandpa Roy’s family.

Know students who need some help as a new semester gets underway? In an Academic Resource Center-sponsored workshop, “Mischief Managed: How to Start the Semester Off Well,” Rick Muthiah, director of learning support services, will cover topics that include how to manage time, build relationships with professors and develop study strategies.

Effective July 1, the MLRC and Portland Center libraries are now only accepting debit and credit cards to purchase print cards. No more digging in your pockets or wallet for that extra change to purchase a print card. You can now purchase the print card you need with your debit/credit card. The library will accept cash or checks for other library purchases.

All IT purchases are now paid with a debit or credit card. They not only accept your debit or credit card, but Apple and Android Pay is also available. So if you need a new ID card, power adapter or to pay for those unexpected repair parts, you will no longer need to provide cash or a check. Just put it on the card.

Please note: ID cards will no longer be charged to student accounts.

Students and employees: All cars should now be registered, parked in the correct lot, and displaying either a temporary permit on the dashboard or a current parking permit.

If you are confused about where your permit allows you to park, please come to the security office for clarification to avoid receiving a parking ticket. No students are allowed to park in the two-block radius around the campus unless they live in a rental house and are displaying a 2016-2017 Neighborhood Permit.
