Welcoming our Guests: While this may seem obvious, please greet and welcome our guests, ask if they need help, walk them to the Information Tent in front of Stevens if they have a question you can’t answer, and help us make this a special time for our new students and their families.

Schedule: The complete schedule for Welcome Weekend can be found at welcome.georgefox.edu. There are two schedules: students, and families and guests.

Parking: On Thursday and Friday, we need employees to park in one of two locations off-campus if at all possible:

  • Northside Community Church (1800 Hoskins St.) and walk to campus or carpool with colleagues to campus in one car.

Meals: Employees who signed up to be volunteers will receive one complimentary meal ticket to be used at lunch or dinner. Other employees desiring to eat on campus can pay as they enter the meal lines.

Fire alarms to be tested in Klages Center today and Aug. 24

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

Both today (Friday) and Wednesday, Aug. 24, Plant Services will be testing the fire alarm systems in the Klages Center. The duration of the testing will depend on how responsive the fire systems are, and on Wednesday the alarms will be demonstrated to the inspector. Unfortunately, exact testing times are not available.

Evacuation will not be necessary in Klages during either time; however, the alarms will be quite loud and unpleasant.

Thank you for your understanding.

Football tickets for George Fox employees

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

George Fox University’s football season kicks off on Sept. 3 at home against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. For the past two seasons, the Bruins have played in front of a Northwest Conference-leading crowd and last year doubled the number of players selected to the All-Northwest Conference team.

All George Fox employees are entitled to free entry into the uncovered general admission bleachers at home football games when they show their George Fox ID at the gate. Children under 10 are also admitted for free. Additional tickets can be purchased at the gate or in advance here. You may also use this link to purchase reserved season tickets in the covered grandstands.

If you have questions, please contact Sarah Reid at sreid@georgefox.edu.

BruinBoards will now host local, part-time job postings

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

As the IDEA Center transitions to Handshake as the new platform for professional internships and jobs, we would like to take the opportunity to inform the campus community about the new way that local businesses and families can connect with our students.

Because local, non-professional jobs are vital to our students’ supplemental income, we want to make sure there is a resource on campus for these employers to connect with students. We will now be posting these opportunities on BruinBoards.

Those looking to post local, part-time opportunities can contact the IDEA Center to request a posting, and students can find them under the “Local Jobs” link on the BruinBoards homepage.

Below is a reference for delineating which system to use:

  • Professional level internships & jobs: Handshake
  • On-campus employment: Handshake
  • Part-time, non-professional jobs in the community (nannies, tutors, baristas, etc): BruinBoards

If you have questions, please contact the IDEA Center at 503-554-2330 or idea@georgefox.edu.

Nurse practitioner position is open in Health and Counseling Center

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

Do you know someone who is a nurse practitioner? The Health and Counseling Center has an immediate opening for a nurse practitioner to provide health care to the George Fox community.

This position is perfect for the individual who would like to have the breaks and summers off and/or has children who would like to attend the university! It’s a friendly, fast-paced environment treating some of the nicest students in the country. Even if the individual is currently employed, we would greatly appreciate bringing this position to their attention.

More info on the position can be found at this link, or they can contact Bill Buhrow at 503-554-2340. Thanks for helping us locate the right person for this pivotal position.

Please do not park in certain lots Aug. 22-26

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

Attention staff, faculty and students: The Welcome Weekend staff asks that you please keep all parking spots vacant in front of Pennington Hall, Edwards Hall and HMS from Monday, Aug. 22, through Friday, Aug. 26.

We also ask that you do not park at the farthest end of the Pennington lot (closest to the suites), as those spots will need to be used for Welcome Weekend traffic flow. We need those spots vacant due to Welcome Weekend activity and new resident move-ins during the week.

We appreciate your cooperation and apologize for any inconveniences this may cause. If you have any pressing questions or concerns, please email Welcome Weekend Coordinator Erika Muir at emuir12@georgefox.edu.

Thank you!

Plan accordingly for extreme heat this week

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016

The state fire marshal just raised the state fire rating to extreme fire danger this morning, and the National Weather Services issued a warning that our region will be experiencing “excessive heat” from Thursday afternoon through the weekend.

We would encourage all residents to close windows and blinds during the day and open them at night, stay hydrated, and if possible minimize your outdoor exertions (we realize this is a challenge). Dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and no longer perspiring are some of the more common elements of dehydration and heat stroke.

Please communicate with your roommates, team members and advisors/coaches during this risky time.

Call for stationery orders

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016

Now is the time to order university stationery. The collective order helps keep costs low – the higher the volume, the lower the cost. Consequently, it is most economical to overestimate needs and store a small surplus.

I will be accepting orders through Wednesday, Aug. 24. For order instructions, go to the marketing communications website. Continue to purchase all non-departmental stationery (including “second-sheet letterhead”) through the university’s print services.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Danette Newkirk (dnewkirk@georgefox.edu)

Please submit course reserves requests ASAP

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016

Faculty, please submit requests for fall semester course reserves as soon as possible. Materials are processed in the order received and can take up to five days to complete.

Please fill out and submit this form. If you have any questions, please contact Patty Vanier at pvanier@georgefox.edu or ext. 2425.

Heacock Commons has been renamed ‘Klages Center’

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

In honor of Esther Klages, a longtime supporter of George Fox during her lifetime, the university has renamed the former Heacock Commons the “Klages Center.”

A portion of the facility is being converted into space for use by the engineering department, which will feature a collaborative design center, or “Collaboratory,” in what was the Klages Dining Room.

The selection of “Klages Center” was chosen to honor a woman who contributed greatly to the school. Her generosity made possible the construction of the Centennial Tower, and she helped fund the quad’s period light poles adorned with flowering baskets and banners. Klages passed away in 2004 at the age of 100.

Show courtesy to guests by vacating Roberts Center lot this afternoon

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

This afternoon (Wednesday), the university’s advancement office is hosting a special Canyon Commons dedication event for donors, business partners and special friends of the university. The doors open at 4:45 p.m., and the program begins at 5:10 p.m.

To show courtesy to our guests, please be sure to avoid parking in the Roberts Center lot if you plan to be on campus past 4:30 p.m.

Thank you for your consideration.
