Plant Services is hosting its annual Phase II event this week. Items will be open for viewing in the Macy and Sutton basements starting today (Tuesday) from noon to 5 p.m. It will open again Wednesday and Thursday, May 3-4, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and again on Friday, May 5, from 8 a.m. to noon.

At the end of every school year, many students have good reusable items that they do not want to take home over the summer. These items often include blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, furniture, etc. In an effort to keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of our resources, Phase II was initiated. Many students have benefited from these items. For example, summer work-study students often find items they need for apartment living.

After students and staff view these items, the remaining items will be donated to the International Student Emergency Fund and other local charities.

On Thursday through Saturday, May 14-16, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue will conduct training in the four structures that will be demolished to make room for the new Student Activity Center – the Gail and Kershner houses and the two Lewis apartments closest to Kershner House (Lewis 7-11 and Lewis 12-16).

The crew will not set fire to the structures or burn them down, but they plan to set off smoke bombs and chop holes in the walls and roofs. So, don’t be alarmed to see smoke coming from this area of campus during those days.

In today’s society it is easy to pass unholy entertainment off as a “social norm.” As you watch TV/movies this week, listen carefully to what the message in the show is. If it is a message that contradicts your Christian beliefs, turn it off or change the channel.

Do this every day for a week and earn 125 extra points. At the end of seven days, reflect over the week and see how this one activity improved your week. Were you more at peace, less stressed, happier, etc.?

Staff and faculty: Now that the dust is settling from the spring semester, it is a great time to update your vehicle registrations!

Need an updated permit?
If you are still using an all-white staff permit, it has been void for two years. If you still have an orange adjunct permit, it expired at Christmas. If you have yet to initially register your vehicle, please do so at your earliest convenience on MyGFU. Be sure to have your DMV vehicle registration slip in front of you, as the database will ask for some information on it.

Adjunct permits
We switched all adjunct permits (orange) over to staff permits last Christmas, so if you’ve yet to switch, please bring your expired permit and any updated vehicle information to the security office. We will do the switch-over and hand you your new staff permit.

Change in vehicle?
If you are currently registered and have the new staff permit that was introduced two years ago, but have a change of vehicle, bring the vehicle information to the security office or email it to Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu to update your information if you aren’t in Newberg.

Need a second permit?
Tired of switching your gratis permit from car to car? It’s only $5 cash to purchase a permit for your second car! Bring your money to the security office and we can issue you a new permit dedicated to your second vehicle.

Have a new car?
Did you purchase a new car but don’t have the new plates yet? No problem! We can register it using the temporary permit on the back window and then update it later when you email your new plate numbers to Nadine.

Portland Center info
If you work at the Portland Center but make frequent visits to the Newberg campus, we need you to register your vehicle as well and to park in the staff lots.

Please don’t wait until September to do these updates, as the line then stretches out the security office door!

End-of-the-fiscal year deposits to be included in this year’s budget must be in Finance no later than Friday, June 30. Checks dated prior to June 30, 2017, must be deposited in the current fiscal year.

Please look around your desks and file cabinets to see if there are any lingering items that need to go to the bank. If you are taking vacation during the July 4 holiday, please send your deposits over BEFORE you leave. If you should have any questions about deposits, please contact Heather Groenlund at ext. 2173.

Final petty cash reconciliations for this fiscal year are due in Finance no later than Friday, June 30. Please remember to submit all receipts, cash, and reconciliation reports before this deadline. Please plan ahead and send these over before you leave, if you will be taking vacation over the July 4 holiday. The Office of Spiritual and Intercultural Life is excited to announce the launch of the pilot Bridge Scholars program, designed to prepare first-generation students for a successful transition from high school to college and establish a strong foundation for college success.

In order to be eligible for the program, students must be a first-generation student and have demonstrated financial need. A first-generation student is defined as being the first in their family to attend a four-year university, and neither parent has a bachelor’s degree.

Aspects of the Bridge Scholars program include the following:

• A two-week, on-campus summer program July 21- Aug. 4, 2017
• Peer mentorship
• Cohort-style classroom experience utilizing LIBA 100

The program is the result of eight months of research and development made possible by the Innovation Grant.

If you know of any entering freshmen who might meet the eligibility requirements, please recommend them to apply to the program or refer them to our office. Applications are due May 15, and space is limited to 20 students.

If you used the FoxTALE grade book for any of your FoxTALE course sites, back up your 2017 Spring grade book to a spreadsheet that is saved outside of FoxTALE. See the instructions here for backing up grades. You will want to keep an archive of your course grades that cover the last five years.

Use your new, empty 2017 Summer (or Fall) sites as the sites in which you will teach. You may import content from another course site. See the instructions here for importing.

Summer 2017 sites are currently hidden from student view. When you are ready, you can share the sites with your students. Here is a quick guide on how to make the courses available: FoxTALE Making Courses Visible to Students.

If your course site is set to Weekly format, your course might show incorrect dates. To change the dates, go to Administration> Edit settings on the course home page. Scroll down to the Course start date, and change it to the first day of your 2017 Summer course. Scroll to the bottom of the page and “Save changes.”

High school choirs from all over Oregon will compete in Bauman Auditorium this Thursday through Saturday, May 4-6.

The mission of the OSAA is to serve member schools by providing leadership and state coordination for the conduct of interscholastic activities, which will enrich the educational experiences of high school students. Approximately 7,000 people attend this event.

Tonight’s Oregon Symphony Concert at 8 p.m. marks the symphony’s 30th year of performing in Bauman Auditorium. The annual performance is made possible by a sponsorship from the Austin family of A-dec.

We are looking for several students to work as interns for the university’s Community Garden this summer. These internships will be based on projects related to your major or minor. In addition to joining us for gardening and a potluck once a week, these internships will take two to four fours per week May through August.

Interested applicants should send an email with a concise description of any relevant experience, why they are interested in the job, and summer availability to Cherice Bock (cbock@georgefox.edu) by Sunday, April 30.

Compost & Garden Health Intern: Collect compostable materials from local businesses and individuals and maintain a compost pile (hot compost). Monitor the compost, as well as attending to the health of other aspects of the garden, researching and implementing organic mitigation strategies (pests, disease, soil health, or other areas of interest/expertise). Biology or other science major preferred.

Food Access & Community Connection: Coordinate the harvest and distribution of extra produce, connecting the food with Newberg residents who need food. Build connections with local individuals and organizations dealing with food security/food sovereignty and create and implement strategies for getting people connected with learning how to grow their own food with us. Social sciences or Christian ministries major preferred.

Garden Structures: If you have experience and enjoy engineering and building things, we have several structural projects on our list for this year, from researching, creating/purchasing, and implementing structures for plants to working with the compost intern to structure a compost area. Engineering major or someone with a strong construction background preferred.

Documentation: This one could go a few different directions (all of these would have the possibility of developing your social media skills if you’re interested in sharing about our work on our social media sites) …

• A science major could document the scientific processes occurring in the garden (planting dates, various treatments, harvest dates and amounts, and so forth).
• A writing/literature major could document our work in a narrative style, sharing about our garden on our blog.
• An art major could use photography and other artistic mediums to document our work.

Join us for Simeon Brown’s final undergraduate violin recital before he heads off to the University of Oregon to get a master’s degree in violin performance. He will perform at 4 p.m. today (Friday) at North Valley Friends Church, 4020 N. College St.

Simeon is an incredible violinist and has contributed so much to George Fox University and the Newberg community. Let’s show him how much we appreciate his hard work and generosity.
