Learn how to have quality relationships with the people you serve! The university’s Individual and Family Matters Counseling Clinic is hosting an eight-week group at the Portland Center that will offer all students or professionals in the fields of education, mental health, physical health or ministry the opportunity to improve the quality of their connections and overall care of the people they serve.

This group is based in Relational Cultural Theory and will also offer insights and growth for working with diverse communities and individuals. The whole group costs $40 and begins Thursday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m.

George Fox students and employees are again playing a key role in making “Night to Shine,” a prom for those with special needs, happen. It’s scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at Newberg Christian Church (2315 Villa Road).

The Newberg community will host this special night for the third year in a row. Come join us for a night of fun, complete with a dinner, dancing, laser tag, limo rides, hair, makeup, shoe shining, karaoke and more!

Do you know students seeking out summer internships? Kaiser Permanente has an excellent summer internship program in Oregon and Washington that offers paid positions for students in accounting/finance, mental health, IT, marketing, engineering and more!

LaTasha Brumfield, a recruiter for this program, will host an info session to share information about it and to meet interested students. Encourage students to swing by Canyon Commons 101 from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, to take advantage of this opportunity!

A George Fox student who attended this info session last year and landed an internship over the summer of 2016 will be there to share about her experience as well.

Join us for a Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation tonight (Monday), when history professor Kerry Irish presents “History of the American Dream” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Irish will discuss the history and development of the American Dream, from its origins among English colonists in America in the early seventeenth century to the present day.

Greetings from the George Fox theatre department! Our second show of the season, Sunday in the Park with George, is set to open on Thursday, Jan. 26! Come join us for this musical about art, artists and the people who love them.

The show runs Jan. 26-29 and again Feb. 2-5, with all performances taking place in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the two Sunday matinees, which begin at 2 p.m.

Student tickets are free both Thursdays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2. It’s recommended you pick up your free ticket in advance online (select “GFU Student” in the drop-down ticket menu). You may also bring your student ID to the door to gain admission, but be aware Thursday nights typically fill up quickly.

Employees are entitled to one complimentary ticket. You may pick up that ticket (select “GFU Employee” in drop-down menu), purchase additional tickets and read a synopsis of the play at theatre.georgefox.edu.

Marcella’s undergraduate degree is from Oregon State in nutrition/exercise science, and her graduate degree is from University of Wisconsin in clinical exercise physiology.

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the seventh annual Dalton Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in Bauman Auditorium.

Dr. Jennifer Wiseman, a senior astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, will speak on the topic “Universe of Wonder: Galaxies, Stars, Planets and Life.” Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

In the presentation, Wiseman will investigate what new discoveries are revealing about the cosmos and the significance of life in a dynamic universe. She will also give a scientific talk at 3 p.m. on Feb. 9 in Wood-Mar Auditorium entitled, “Frontiers of Astronomical Discovery: Galaxies, Dark Energy, Planets and Life.”

Wiseman received her BS in physics from MIT, discovering comet Wiseman-Skiff in 1987, and continued her studies at Harvard, earning a PhD in astronomy in 1995. She is a Fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation, a network of Christians in Science. She has authored several essays addressing the relationship of astronomy and the Christian faith.

A dessert reception and Student Research Poster session follows the lecture.
